Hey just wanted to show you guys some pics of my latest obsession.

Hella supertone horns.

If you stand in front of them for about 5 seconds you want to get away from them. The sound starts to make you feel dizzy. No joke!!!

They are loud!!! and on a Suburu WRX they are OEM... (at least that is what I am told.)

I bought them at www.rallylights.com...aka Susquehanna Motor Sports. Great deal and shipping was fast.

Install took about 10 minutes. Drilled a hole built a few wires, bolted them on, plugged them in and HONK!!!!!!!!!!

Did you disable the stock horn? The only sets that I see online are for Porches apparently. Would those work on a 4runner?
 
yep those are awesome sounding horns, used to have em before i switched to bosch.. still have mine in the garage..

those should work on your 98.. you don't have to disable your OEM horn, just plug the + to your OEM harness and ground the - wire... and you should be all set.

pretty sure it would be, bigger wires and slap on the relay that comes with it should make it more louder.. how much louder? that i haven't found out yet...
 
So what do they sound like exactly? Like an eighteen wheeler?

How much is the Hella wiring harness and how hard is the install?

If you can't tell I'm not a big fan of the stock horn. :)
 
My wife says they sound girly.... ahhh what does she know anyway..... :)

and it is by no means an 18 wheeler horn sound...

It is a very European sound, due to the tones being far enough apart on the frequency spectrum (low 300 Hz and high 500 Hz) it makes the horns shrill, which scares and bothers other drivers bad enough to notice you.

Which is why horns were invented....

I love German stuff. Sometimes a bit too over engineered... but still good stuff....
 
the harness makes it a couple decible louder, i had to use my horn couple of times, when this lady swerved in my lane while in turns, and i honk at her and she jumped lol, its so funny ,i wanted hornblasters train horns tho.
making the harness is easy, folly the diagram, its like the same for fog lights and headlights, i think i kinda regret buying the harness from lightwerkz.com, but all in all i didnt have time to get wires and fuse holder and made one, plus for 45 bucks, its all premade and have extra length of wires, lets u put the horns where ever u want and not worrying about the wires too short.

True, true. I think if I went with horns they would have to be like the ones in hornblasters. Those are SOOO funny.
 
Horns have been working great and I have been blowing them every chance I get, I love em...

I even managed to piss one lady off last Sunday.
 
Anyone ever tried installing the low tone Hella (300hz) with the low tone stock horn (400hz)? The two Hellas are 300hz and 500hz which produce a difference tone of 200hz. If you mix the 300hz Hella with the 400hz stock, you should get a difference tone of 100hz and the Hella should over power the stock horn a little. So, the 300hz would be a dominant tone with a lower difference tone than the two hellas combined. There will obviously be a sacrifice in total power, but the tradeoff would be tone for loudness.

I think I'm going to try this and post my findings. Anyone wanna give it a go as well?
 
dont even bother to do that, if all u want is that, its more effective if u can buy the whole system, its cheaper in the long run. i was lucky to get a use set, so now i have 4 hella horns, its just 2 sets of each.
 
What do you mean 'whole system'? Also, what I'm specifically wondering about are the two frequencies of the horns. If the 'whole system' is just two sets of the hella supertones, then the frequencies are still the same. My primary concern was with the high pitch sound some have mentioned/complained about. Using both low tone horns (one hella and one stock) gives a lower perceived pitch and a 'louder than stock' total horn volume.
