Hella Supertone Twin Horns

I was looking at this upgrade and was on the fence. How much louder is this than stock? I usually don't use the horn unless I really mean it and when I do I want to make women scared and little children cry when I lean on the horn :D.

I was looking at the 85115 Supertone twin horn. Did you get these or the 85315?

I put in the 85115. I don't know in decibles how much louder this horn is, but I think it is fairly significant. I also did not put in the relay that comes with the horn I just hooked up to the OEM relay. There have been some people on other boards that have stated that you may get more sound out of them if you use the included relay. It is doing its job just fine for me without. I think the other notable factor is the tone of these horns--they just don't sound like any OEM horn out there that I can think of. I do think they will get the attention of those in your way! Now if you really want to scare them you may want to go ahead and get some of the air horns!:D
 
I use the stock horn as often as I need to. So going louder really woudnt be nice. (I drive through Nassau, Queens and sometimes NYC) This is the only real way to communicate with other cars that cut you off w/out giving them too many fingers and hand gestures. I guess my question is, how much power do the horns require, and can you hold down as long as you need to get the point across?
 
They are just 12v horns. I just really hooked mine up as plug and play. Grounded them and then plugged in to the OEM relay. It works just like the stock horn just louder and with a different tone. I think there was a sound clip somewhere, I will try and find it and post it.
 
I'm still trying to locate that sound clip so I can post it, just having a little difficulty, but they are definitely NOT higher pitched. Lower pitched, though I'm not sure quite Semi low.
 
Hard to really do it justice via the computer. It does sound more european, which would make sense being made in Germany. They are very loud though and catch the attention of those on the road. Had the chance to use them last night on the way to work. It had the culprit moving back into their own lane rather quickly.
 
I just bought a pair off ebay for $50 + $12 shipping. This guy seems to have a few and it's the cheapest I've seen. Make sure you get part# 85115 and not #85315 if you're looking for them. I'll post my impression of them when I get them installed.

Man Bobby, you are hitting ebay for all your Hella stuff! Your lights seemed like a sweet price; what do these horns normally retail for?

I think I am going to opt for an airhorn hooked to a seperate switch so that I can keep my stock horn for minor offenses.

I think I lucked out on the FF75 lights. I had a bid for $50 on one auction that I lost. Then I found another guy selling them with a buy it now of $37.99 with free shipping. Retail is $80-$90. The seller is "offroad911" and he seems to have more than a few left. $38 shipped is a killer deal.

I looked all over the net and the horns are usually pretty expensive. $65 was the cheapest I've seen so $62 shipped was a good deal.

Normally, I don't use my horn unless there's a bonehead so when I use it, I want to be heard. I've heard of these horns a few years ago from some BMW guys but I never did the upgrade.

ps. I have a few other things on ebay that I'm bidding on :D

I just went outside to install the horns and it didn't seem to work. Is there a write-up on installing these? Or a wiring diagram on how the stock horns are wired would help too.

Did you make sure to ground both horns? It is a very easy plug and play install. You ground both horns, it doesn't matter which plug on the back you decide to use. Then you can just plug the OEM plugs onto the back of the horns. No need to use the Hella relay that was included. Discussed this with a mechanic that I work with. Since Toyota horns are already working off of an OEM relay that is sufficient. I just went to Radio Shack and bought some wire and some female connectors. Grounded the horns to the same nut that the horns are installed with. Not sure if this helps or not. May be possible to get some pictures for you.
 
Nope, that makes sense. I was thinking of grounding them to the nut holding the horns. I looked on the other side and saw a place to mount one of the horns. I'd have to splice one wire to make it long enough to reach though.

Yeah I got a friend who got this with a switch. He'll be driving by someone who won't move, flip the switch, and the big thing is that he tries to beat his last record without turning off the switch. We got to like five minutes one time.
 
Ok. Last night, I got 2 small pieces of wire and 90 deg quick disconnects from my stash of electronic parts. I attached the disconnects to the wires and soldered the other end to the mounting brackets of the horn. I was too tired last night to put them on so I installed the horns during lunch since they were ready and I just needed to take off the stock horns and install the new ones. Took all of 5 mins. I used a 12mm socket and ratchet, the only tools I needed today.

I haven't really leaned on the horn but I tested it and it does sound louder than stock. Just what I was looking for :D.
 
hmm im in on the fence on doing a horn up grade, Im with cleric , I want a semi horn.. I just wish I could find a loud semi horn without having to hook up an aircompressor to it.
 
Get 'em.

They're really easy to install and they are louder than stock. I'm not quite sure since I only tapped the horn quickly just to make sure they work but they were pretty loud.
