Hello! Bittersweet Purchase

Picked this rig up as a daily driver/beater for $3900 in socal. Car is in fantastic shape inside/out for a 2001 and drives good. Seller stated car had 112K miles. Ran carfax and maintenance records after and it really had 245K+ miles.

Contacted seller who didn't know this since he was gifted the car. He called his friend who gifted the car and let me know the engine and odo was changed out from 1 car so the engine and odo should match but w/ no paperwork.

So overall I still think it was a good purchase for the price and condition. Just trying not to let the mod bug bite.

What do you guys think?

Sounds like a good deal to me, probably better than the one I got. I paid a little more than that for a vehicle I believe actually has 239k miles on everything.

I mean the one I bought I haven't trusted enough to drive to work yet, but I've only got a list of like 2 minor items to fix before I hit the road.

I'd only be concerned that the engine swap was done right, but you say it runs and drives good, so it must have been.

at least your seller disclosed it before you decided to make the purchase. I found out after the fact but my fault for not doing my due diligence
 
Sounds like seller was lying to me. He was supposedly gifted the vehicle and the person gifting it to him failed to tell him about the engine swap? Riiiiiiight.
 
Sounds like he was lying to me too. If you had a car in good working condition what kind of friend would just give it away? His friend probably blew the engine and then this other guy is quick with his hands so he gave it to him to replace the engine in. Just speculation but either way I would give the car a once over and make sure Everything is tight and one not so a wheel doesn't go passing you by as you drive down the road.
 
Nice looking rig and regardless of the mileage situation I don't think you got a bad deal. Transparency on any deal is definitely expected, and I really do hope that it wasn't blatant.

What are you planning on doing with it next?
 
Still a pretty good deal even with the mileage. If you get on autotrader/cars.com/cargurus, most of them with that mileage are still going for 6-7k.

In my search, I test drove two of them. One showed 150k but the Carfax showed it to actually have 250-260k. The other showed 140k but the Carfax showed it to have 210k. Both were revealed to me via Carfax. Had the unfortunate obligation of telling the owners. Neither owner knew and had proof showing they didn't know...poor guys. I didn't end up purchasing either of them due to this. I ended up with a 2000 Limited w/200k ACTUAL miles. Got it for a steal at 4,400.

For 3,900 I'd say you came out just fine.

Yes, massive. Both of them showed me proof where they had signed off on their purchases with "133,000" and "110,000", respectively. In both cases the odometers had been rolled back considerably; 100k in one case and about 70k in the other. For some reason, federal law says that vehicles 10+ years or older are exempt from odometer reporting so my assumption is that this issue is rampant on vehicles 10+ years old.

I definitely learned a lot during my search!
