Hello! Bittersweet Purchase

Yes, massive. Both of them showed me proof where they had signed off on their purchases with "133,000" and "110,000", respectively. In both cases the odometers had been rolled back considerably; 100k in one case and about 70k in the other. For some reason, federal law says that vehicles 10+ years or older are exempt from odometer reporting so my assumption is that this issue is rampant on vehicles 10+ years old.

I definitely learned a lot during my search!

So let me get this straight for a second.

You went as a potential buyer on 2 rigs and informed the *sellers* that they were victims of odo fraud; meaning they had not run their own carfaxes themselves when buying their rigs?

Sounds a bit pathetic to me on their behalf.

You are spot on, that is exactly what happened. Seems to me they trust dealers just a little too much. $40 to run a Carfax can save you a lot of headache and money if it turns out there's something on that Carfax that you didn't want to see. A Carfax is really only a waste if it checks out!

I was checking out a Honda CR-V for my MIL.

Found a Carfax for $12 on local craigslist. Paypal'd the money and sent the VIN and he emailed me the PDF a few minutes later.

This thread makes me feel a lot better about my $1900 1-owner 3rd gen with 266k

Seriously though, I'd ask for some money back if he told you it was actual miles.

I nearly bought a 4runner that was advertised with 180,000kms (112kmiles) on it until buddy fessed up to me that it had that on the engine, everything else was 360,000kms (225kmiles).

Ended up buying one with 233,000 kms (145kmiles), glad I dodged that bullet.

pictures don't show up...

I just paid $4700 for a 97 with 212,400 miles. I feel like you still got a better deal than I did. Prices of these things in Arizona are jacked up.
