Hello,
I'm looking to buy a 2nd generation or a 3rd generation 4Runner. I'm looking to buy a reliable older SUV to haul my labrador around and occasionally go offroading. =D
I have searched the forum and it appears that the 2nd generation 6 cylinder engine is problematic with a pre-mature headgasket failure
... It looks like Toyota will replace it for free only once regardless of # of owners and or age... That is good news, but do they "correct" the problem or simply replace it with the same part?
A 4-cylinder engine appears to be more reliable but I would rather have a little more power with the 6?... How is the reliability of the 3rd generation 6 cylinder engine?
I notice a trend with these vehicles while searching for one to buy. A lot of them have had rebuilt motors... is there something about engines that wear faster than other cars (I'm comparing it to my civic; my civic has 250,000 on original motor. I notice alot of rebuilds around 125,000-200,000 mark)
Also, how is the transmission reliability on these two generations? Any other major problems (other parts) with these vehicles?...
I'm just weary of buying a "money-pit" right now since I'm kind of strapped on cash, but am need of a SUV... my 90 Honda Civic isn't cutting it
