Hello, everyone!!
I have been the proud owner of a '99 4-runner sr5 for about 6 months now. This is my first Toyota product, and I am very impressed. This is a good all around 4x4. I have previously owned a v-8 Grand Cherokee, and a Cherokee. I find the Toyota to be far superior. My only complaint is that she tends to get over on 3 wheels when topping a hill with ruts on the other side. A charateristic of independent front suspension, I suppose. I am used to a Jeep's solid front axle.
Anyway, I have really put her to the test over the last few months and can recommend some very good offroading spots. This last weekend I took her to Idaho Springs, Colorado. We conquered a 12,500 ft. mountain peak. I found an offroad trail about 60 miles in length. She was able to perform with the LandRovers and RangeRovers quite nicely. Slightly under powered due to the extreme altitude, but so was I.
Glamis, California ( Imperial Sand Dunes) is west of Yuma, Arizona. There you will find massive sand dunes several hundred feet high. Be prepared to spend some gas money. Gas mileage dropped to about 4 miles a gallon , but an excellent time. Recommend trip in the winter and spring months due to extreme heat. LOTS of partiers. Bring a GPS and air your tires down to 15 PSI. Watch out for sand bowls, they are entrapment hazards.
Blythe, California is located along the Colorado River on the California/ Arizona line. There are some mountain ranges to the north. General Paton used to conduct tank and artillery training here. There are lots of fox holes and artillery trenches in the surrounding hills. Old mining roads offer a wide variety of terrain to play on.
Palm Springs , California offers tons of mountain ranges for those who like to play in the mountains.
If you guys know of any other good spots, please let me know. My work requires me to travel all over the country, and I am always looking for a new trail.
