hello everyone; I have just returned to Toyota after a brief departure 
Not new to 4x4s, have had a few listed in my signature below. Also had a Highlander. Last year traded because the Tundra was standard cab so every time we went on adventures it was crowded. Loved the Highlander so wanted to trade both for a Sequoia (sort of morph the two if you visualize that), but ran into an awesome deal on Armada back when they could hardly give away due to high gas prices. After almost a year, decided it was just too big, want something that is more light and nimble. 4Runner fits that requirement, but can still tow our pop-up camper. I won't whine about the Armada, it was good for hauling trailers and visitors - now they can just rent or squeeze in the 4R and our car '
' But the Armada is too heavy off road, and the Nissan rattles just started to worry us. Plus, for us, our local Toyota dealer is so much better than our first and last experience at local Nissan dealer. Decided to cut our losses and trade at a good value before gas prices go up again and make big SUVs worthless again.
My first 4Runner now, and I am excited - my 4R detailed in my sig. My wife was hesitant when we started looking, especially because we did the same a year ago ':bash:' But she loves it after only a week, I think because it has so much in common with the Highlander that she loved.
I have a few questions, and am anxious to do some mods, so will appreciate advise:
- Downhill Assist - tried it out this past weekend on a nearby trail - seems to work incredibly as advertised. But sounds like a jack hammer, I suppose it will hammer because it is quickly applying every brake. But should it be loud? Should I get it checked or will it self diagnose any common issues?
- larger tires to give a bit more clearance and to handle rough trails we have in Arizona - my 4R has 265/65-17, from posts I have read on here I am thinking 265/70 will go bigger but not too big, although I might go a little bigger to 32", what do you folks think?
- lift - I read on here that 3 inch is max without a lot of ugly complications - I'm thinking 2 inch enough unless I go crazy on tires
- homelink - my wife misses this - our 4R has many options added like sunroof and rear air curtains. I saw a roof console on eBay that has glasses case, lights and sunroof switch just like mine - it also has homelink switches. Asked dealer for their parts price - told me could not add because those switches talk to radio, and my 04 is not wired. Makes no sense - other vehicles with homelink just have a circuit card right in that roof console. Any knowledge from you folks?
- on board air - might even do this before the tires because seems fairly low cost to put an electric compressor on the right front fender - airing down would give me some improvement on stock size when on rough trails. Costco has a decent little one I think - any experience out there?
- I'd like to get a tuner if possible - something like SuperChips - to adjust for increased tire size once do that - usually can get them on eBay for less than a dealer might charge for only that adjustment. And then have it for any nice tunes But I cannot find any on web for 4Runner. Any advise?
