Upgrading from a 2015 Limited to a 2023 GX460 Luxury

My 2015 Limited has a lot of maintenance due and was thinking about using it as a time to upgrade as I am being offered $20k on a trade in. The Limit needs the following:

New suspension
All new fluids (transmission, brake, PS, engine, oil, differentials etc)
Spark plugs
Front brakes
X-REAS delete
New tires

Because this will probably cost $3-4k to do, I was thinking about just upgrading it.

I have been eyeing GX460s, specifically the 2022-2023s with the Carplay but they seem to be about $50-60k for low mileage luxury ones.

Is it really worth $35-40k to just switch to a newer GX460 from a Limited? I also see that the GX460's have known issues like valley coolant leaks, KDSS issues, cam tower leaks, and other known expensive maintenance items.

Another thing is since we have had the 4runner, all we ever really do is forest roads and some slight off roading to trail heads/camp sites that I see Subarus at. We also have a car seat requirement and like the storage the 4runner offers.

We have both a 5th gen 4Runner and a GX460, you'll like the GX460, upgrade in every way on the 4Runner in my opinion. The issues you mention are all a little over blown from my experience research. this said, you really cant go wrong with either. One note, on the GX, i would go with any version that does NOT have the self leveling air bags for the back axle. unless you tow its completely useless and just another thing to break. I also like the leather better than the fake leather for durability... but those are small things.

I own a 2015 Limited and I personally would not pay for the upgrade. Everything you mentioned is normal wear and tear. Mine has 85k and I do all of my own work. That being said, the GX is absolutely beautiful and I can definitely see wanting to upgrade. Good luck with your decision.

Do what seems good to you, but as for me, I highly value projected reliability. One of the best publicly-accessible reliability forecasts is the Consumer Reports database. They build it with an annual survey, it has been extremely consistent with my experience.

Currently the 2015 4Runner is rated 62/100 for reliability with 10 years of data (the scores generally revise downward as data accumulates).

The 2022 Lexus GX is currently rated at 99/100 reliability, and the 2023 is at 79/100.

I have noticed that their scores for many 2021 and 2022 Lexus models are really good like that, but scores after tend to be lower. No idea why.

One of the reasons I decided to go from a second-gen Tacoma to a fifth-gen 4Runner was because of the reliability rating: they rate the 2024 4Runner at 86/100 currently, but when I bought mine it was 98/100. Obviously some data has come in and the score was revised down. YMMV...
