Yes, the aformentioned Suburban and Trooper basically ran up my ass as I embarrassingly slid out of control. I was more afraid of those bozo's hitting me than anything off the road. As the medium was sloped downward and was free of guardrails or ditches.

I was proud of how I never stopped, straightened out and kept going. Probably by not stopping, it kept my momentum up to get up and off the median.

I was pushing my luck too. I had thought about getting new tires on many occasions. I had a flat a few weeks ago and the tire guy said these tires still had 30K miles left on them!?!

Nothing like spending another $715 two days after Christmas.

Hey Mark, glad to see a fellow Jerseyan on the board ( even though I'm not a "fella" you must be driving behind the same doofus in a sedan that I always seem to get stuck behind!! I have to say these stock Dunlops are stinky ( there is another thread about them) , but I think our biggest problem are all of the idiots who see one drop of rain or snow and outright panic!! ( for those outside of NJ, we seem to have more than our share of driving idiots...we also have the best Diner served Taylor Pork roll and cheese at 3 am!! )

What part of Joisey?? Between the New Jersey drivers and the New York drivers that trickle into the state, we definitely have our share of stories! On one hand you could have the old guy driving in the fast lane of the GSP going 35 mph with his left turn signal on and on the other you could have the wise people tailgating you even though you are doing 85 in a 65 zone. That is why I just take it nice and easy in the snow when I am driving on these major highways. My parents always tell me, it is not your driving, it is the one behind you and next to you. I think I will drop it down even more after hearing the horror stories with the Dunlops. In New Jersey, you are never safe on the roads, even more so with those stock Dunlops!! :

Every vehicle has shitty stock tires with regards to snow.....3rd gens had even crappier Dunlops, I cooked a set in like 20,000 kms lol

That said, I drove the Dunlops for 2 years (winters included) without hitting anything. The Michelins on the new truck seem better in the snow, so that's nice. Of course Blizzaks or something would be a huge improvment, but more money.

Thought I'd throw in my 2 cents here...


One thing I'll point out is that any AT tire, Rezo or BFG or whatever, will not be as good as a dedicated snow tire. My previous vehicle was an Audi A4 Quattro (AWD), and for snow tires I used Dunlop WinterSport tires. The AWD with those snow tires was the best vehicle I've ever driven on the snow or ice, hands down. In fact, one reason I liked the 4-Runner so much was that it uses the same technology for it's 4WD system as the Audi did, which is a torsion-drive based system.

Unfortunately, not a lot of snow tires are out there for the 265/65R17 size, at least none that I could find.

Anyways - with regards to the Dunlops, they are an OK tire. While they aren't top performers in any one category, they have held up well for me so far, but I only have 10,000 miles on them. I've driven them through a few snow storms now, they are OK. They don't have near the traction my WinterSport tires had, which I miss dearly. But the weight of the 4-Runner does help in the heavy snow drifts, and I'll get by this winter on these tires.

I certainly plan to upgrade the tires next fall, as at that point in time I'll have near 20,000 miles on them and most all-season tires with 20,000 miles on them will simply not be good enough for driving in snow.

I've got the cheapo Dunflops as well (w/13k miles on it) and I'm debating whether I should replace them with the Revos now or wait till next fall. I'm planning on making several trips up to the mountains this winter. For those of you who have the Revos, how do they perform in rain and snow? Thx n Adv!

That seems to be everywhere.

Worst nightmare I ever saw was in the late 80's in Houston, TX. They had sleet that built up to 1/4" deep. It's a very rare event when that happens and even though many are transplants from somewhere else, those were not the people out driving on it.

They went completely nutz. Driving along in traffic and they'd just cut the wheel hard to change lanes, hit the gas to maneuver, all kinds of dumb ass stuff. Nutz, completely nutz.

I never saw anything like it or anything like it since.

You Texakins know what the 610 loop is like anyway. This was like someone would throw a switch and various people would go, "oh, let's try this." DAYUM.

Try the Sam Houston Beltway and its high arching single lane turns. Yikes, my hands sweat driving over that on a dry day.

That is not a stock OEM tire. I am referring to Grandtek AT20's, which are $60 each from Tire Rack. The price ought to tell you what a POS they are.

Don't always judge a tire by its price.

My Ford Escape had low-cost Continental Contitrac SUV tires on it from the factory and they were AMAZING for an all-season tire in the snow. In fact, if they make them in the proper size for the 4Runner, I just might buy them for my next set of tires. I was really impressed with the long wear and excellent snow traction, not to mention the quiet ride they provided.

Sac State - What part of VA did this happen in? I drove through that snow storm (If you can even call it that) myself and it was a piece of cake. Where I live, we maybe got 1/4". I live in Northern VA, about 30 minutes south of DC.

March 04 in VA we actually got hit with a couple of inches of snow and the truck performed flawlessly in the snow with the stock dunlops. I had no problems navigating the unplowed streets in my neighborhood. I was happy that I bought the truck in January. I too will be ordering better tires, but I'll wait till they are out of tread. I"ve only put 13k miles since I bought it in January so I have at least another year on them if not more.
