Help 4runner speedo's off!!!

So I would like to ask for some help from you experienced yota guys.
Here's the deal. My speedo is off about 4-6 mph off. I know one option would be to go back to stock tires(I don't wanna do that).
Are there any other options. I would like to get it as close as possible.
It seems to be fine at speeds 10mph and 20mph but after that it's off

My stock one is about 1-2 MPH off at 60-70, but that keeps me from speeding so bad

I think there's an aftermarket speedometer sensor calibrator, but I cannot seem to find it. I guess it depends how much you want to spend to fix it.

Since your truck is an 02 it should have the digital odometer and calibration (unlike 96-98, mechanical gears) so I think the dealer may be able to recalibrate it for you.

I've called the dealership and they said they couldn't do anything. I've done some research online and found this guy who done his on one of the forums. His truck was a little newer.

My 4Runner was originally a 15" wheel truck... I used the Dakota Digital speedo calibrator:

Set for the difference between the stock tires and the new tires (265/70-17), the speedo reads exactly the same as before the wheel/tire swap, according to GPS.

You can hook it up right at the ABS module in the passenger footwell. I can get you wire colors for for a '97 and '99 if you need them. I think TheDurk has all the diagrams, if he notices this post...

Set for the difference between the stock tires and the new tires (265/70-17), the speedo reads exactly the same as before the wheel/tire swap, according to GPS.

Hey guys, so thanks for the response and great info. I printed off a copy of the 4runner wire diagram. I plan to cut the wire from the ECU to the speedo. The wire is gray with blue. Did u have any issues hooking it up right at the ABS module??? Thanks for the info Charlie

Not only is there no issue with it that way, it is the only way to do it for the auto trans (which you have, since you have an '02)... The speedo signal comes from the ABS computer, goes up to the cluster, then to the ECU. In that order. The signal from the ABS computer to the cluster is different than the signal from the cluster to the ECU.

You MUST hook up the speedo healer in between the ABS computer and cluster, with the ABS computer side as the input and the cluster side as the output.

I only have the digital copy of the '97 diagram, so that's my reference... but it is a gray with blue tracer wire that you will be interrupting to calibrate the speedo - so you probably have that part correct. The signal on that wire comes from the ABS ECU (passenger kick panel) and goes up to the gauge cluster, where the signal is conditioned and sent to other parts of the truck (Engine ECU, cruise control module, 4WD ECU, Diff lock ECU, etc.).

Check the combination meter page where it should say 'from ABS ECU' for the signal coming in to the cluster, and 'to XXX' for all the other signals on the other side of the speedometer graphic. I figured kick panel would be the best place to put the speedo converter so that I could mess with it easier than if it was behind the gauge cluster or somewhere else under the dash.

That's pretty slick. I didn't know these products existed.

My speedo is 7% off so when I am showing 70 I am actually going 75. So, when my wife drives and cruises at 5 over she's actually going over 80.

I think I'll order one.

That's probably a good idea. I sometimes forget that my speedometer is anywhere from 6-8mph over what it actually reads at highway speeds. The speeding ticket I got several months ago reminded me about that real quick. Thought I was going 20 over but was actually 28.

It's best to have a friend drive while you calibrate/program the unit. I had to view the gps, my cluster, pull over and tweak the sgi5. I did this a few times, it will help to have someone drive while you tweak it.

These digital dakota's are popular for those swapping engines into cars and trucks that didn't come factory. You can find them often for sale on swap forums.

I'm amazed at how many people don't adjust the speedo...

Anyway... calculate the difference in rolling diameters between the stock tires and your current tires using an online calculator and start from there. For me, the calculated 13% difference was perfect to return to stock-like calibration (ie 70mph indicated on cluster is 68-69mph actual). The ECU actually reads the correct speed via the scangauge. I went from the 225/75-15's to 265/70-17's.

The Dakota Digital instructions are a bit hard to figure out - post back if you have questions on the install so we can get it down in the record. If you squint on the photo I posted, you can mostly see how it is hooked up - I used the correct wire colors for the power/ground wire extensions on my '99.

So after a long travel outside the country. I was able to work on the speedo issue.

I want to say that the 2002 4runner abs module is located under drive side dash.
After looking through all colored wires. I located the grey with blue tracer wire. I cut the wire in half. Hooked it up. After hooking it up I didn't have to adjust because it was near on the money. Which I was very happy with

Signal in wire came from abs module
Out 2 wire came from speedometer
(We had it at out 1 but the speedo didn't work. So just keep it at out 2)
