Help!! 4runner won't go into gear

Im stuck on the side of the freeway! My A/t temp light came on and then went off but now no matter what gear I'm in it won't actually engage, earlier when driving it was hold in gear very long and would take awhile to shift, then when I would come to a stop it would surge forward almost feeling like someone bumped into me, but not it won't shift into gear

Does your tranny fluid look like a strawberry milkshake? Are you low on tranny fluid?

Through the dipstick the fluid is clear redish doesn't look to be milkshake looking, Ive check the fluid appears to be at an ok level, not severely low or anything like that

Did you bump the transfercase into Neutral? Make sure you're still in 4H.

Nope won't even go into gear just reeves

You're 100% sure?

If the light on your dash says AT/P, your transfer case is in Neutral. At least move the shifter to 4WD and back to make sure it's properly engaged.

I was able to get it into 4L just to see if it would drive normal but no difference looks like I'm going to have to get towed!

pull the radiator cap and check to see what the coolant looks like.

you could of lost the torque converter, have you had the tranny serviced recently?

I just bought this runner 5,000 miles ago, the fluids had been changed about 20,000 miles ago, was planning on doing it again soon, guess it could be a little late, I can't really see the radiator fluid to well its to dark now

Has anyone else had this happen? Or have any other ideas of possibilities? Still sitting and waitin for my tow probably another 1.5 hours

Had same problem

I have had the same thing happen on a few occasions over the last 8 years, including last night.

1. Put the gear shift in Neutral

2. Slip the 4WD shift into 4H

3. Put the gear shift into Drive or Reverse

This works for me when I have the exact same problem. Hope it works for you.

I have a 99 limited with 321000mi. Won't go into reverse. all others gear shift smoothly with no hesitation. Never had a problem up until now. Checked tranny fluid it was fine, changed it anyways. Solenoid maybe?

Hi i am current having the same no reverse gear issue with my 2000 Ltd (200K mi) with no reverse gear nor 3rd gear. How did you end up solving the issue?
