Help ... '85 4Runner, $4,000 good deal?

I dont know, but I found the truck on the website. It looks very nice, but I'm not sure about the price. I mean, it is a strait axle, it does have the altimeter package, I don't see any rust, and that paint is sick. I say that if you can get it down near 3K, it would be a better deal, maybe even a good one. The solid axle is the biggest thing, plus there are not too many stock 85's laying around. The tend to get wheeled quick. Once you find out the milage and stuff, post it and maybe it could swing either way.

The clinometer (altimeter) doesn't mean a thing, it just useless bells and whistles (when I'm waay off camber, that's the last thing I'm looking at).
You can not see the rust on a Toyota in a pic !!!
The ONLY way to check for rust on an 80's Toy is to go over every sq in of the frame w/a small hammer. The frames rust from the inside out, so by the time you can see it, it's bad. Believe me, been there, frame swaps suck.
Sheet metal rust can be hidden very easily, esp by a nice paint job to distract you.
And when was the Timing Chain last replaced ?? Should be at least once ona 20 yr old truck.

I totally hear you about the hammer, as I live in Massachusetts and rust is not something out of the ordinary. I have see 4Runners up here with holes the size of basketballs in the rear fender, and still sell for over $2000. I was lucky, I only paid $1000 for mine, but it had a fair share of rust. I am in the process of cutting it all out and putting new metal in. The frame is very solid, so that is not an issue. Very good advice, as I have seen a frame rot right out from underneath a toyota pickup. It wasn't pretty.

I'm looking for about 5500 if you are interested let me know. Thanks. I'm trying to gain interest for the car. Private Party Book Value is $6800 if I remember correctly last time I checked.

I have an 86 runner that was given to me my mother, and I am just starting to feel the effects of what 20 years of NORMAL use on a computer controlled engine can led to, such as $200+sensors. I only like the 1st gen. runners and think that they are great but unless the seller of the truck you are looking at can prove to you that it has been well taken care of and restored then I would not pay over 2k for it. You will end up nickel and dimming your self to death and end up hating the truck...my primary car is an 02 Subaru WRX. Toyota parts are very expensive, I used to own a 74 fj40 land cruiser, and the parts (Toyota) were very pricey. Good luck and be cautious of good looking older cars, they could be wolf in sheep
