Quick intro: bought my 2006 sport edition 2WD about 9 months ago with recommendations from this forum. Love the car every day despite 200k. I drove across country from California to Ohio in July without a single issue.
...until today. Driving 300 miles from Cincinnati to Nashville with my two kids and my wife, the transmission started slipping around 70 to 80 mph on the highway. That was 240 miles into the drive. After doing that for about 15 minutes, it seem like it suddenly couldn't shift at all and I had to pull off the side of the road. I called roadside assistance and about 15 minutes later decided to give it another try and made it to an exit driving about 30 mph, which was the point at which the entire car started shaking and rattling.
Because it was Thanksgiving, I had a lot of difficulty finding the tow company or rental car. Thus, we made the decision to drive the car the remaining 60 miles to Nashville with the hazard lights on and no faster than the car would allow. I discovered that if I shift from Drive into "4" The car would allow me to get up to about 50 Mph before rattling violently. In Drive it rattles and slips even at 25-30 mph.
I know nothing about cars, but obviously this is concerning to me. But more importantly, I'm now in Nashville with my family of four, and need to get me and my car home to Cincinnati. The question to the group is this: is this a problem that is serious enough that I need to leave my car at a dealer in Nashville and trying to get it fixed remotely and then towed home? Or Alternatively, is it safe to drive home at a slow 40-50 mph (300 miles), take it easy, and just get me and my family home and deal with it there?
Any advice? Am I damaging what's left of the transmission by driving it? Am I putting my family at risk? For the record, we have a rental car here for now while I figure this out.
