Hello, I just purchased a 99 4Runner with about 94k. It is a 5 speed stick, and I don't believe I burned out the clutch but something definetely got burned out. When the engine is under a load, i.e. a hill or towing I get the raunchy smoke smell, once I looked in my mirror and even saw smoke. Now for the clutch, I have driven sticks before w/o burning them out so I really hope I didn't burn this one but it isn't out of the question. Could this possibly be from the rear differential? i did notice some liquid like residue on the bell housing. thanks so much for your help!

Differential

I a similar problem they usually create that smell on newer model due to the catalics,But on your car wich is the same as mine was the differentisl leaking and the brake shoes do the rest. check for
seal and don't forget to refill it.

Good luck
