Help - coolant overflow not siphoning back into rad

Hoping someone can help. I'm having the same problems with my 3.0 (slow). New water pump/t-stat/radiator and cap. NO problems on short drives, but after an hour on the freeway (~3k RPM / 65 MPH) and then getting off the freeway coolant pushes into the reservoir and never siphons back. If I turn the engine off and let it sit for 5 min and turn it back on the temp goes up (just below the red) and then back down (once I rev it up a little). I can get back on the freeway and drive another hour with no problems, but if I stop and let it idle for a few minutes (drive thru for example) the temp will start to creep up since there's not enough coolant (I suspect). I've searched high and low for leaks with no luck.... this 4runner has a rear heater and I wonder if there is a little leak that I'm not seeing...

The truck was not well taken care of prior to my owning - and had stopleak in it (bad waterpump). Pressure test is good, no (visible) exhaust gasses (bubbling).

I'm running green now, but am about to flush and switch to red....

Anyway, hoping someone see's this and has advice.

Thanks!

Also check the ends of the overflow hose for coolant. Replacing my hose helped (as mine was cracked) but until I put proper hose clamps around it, it still leaked out of the ends even though it was "the right size"

3VZ-FE Not Siphoning Coolant

Thanks for the suggestions. I've replaced the radiator cap and checked the overflow tube. It seems that it works on short drives, but not the longer drives. I've flushed the system (once) but I noticed MORE of that rust colored garbage in the bottom of the overflow reservoir - which I think is the "copper" stopleak crap. So I will flush it again and see what happens.

On another note, any problem by-passing the rear heater? I suspect that may be the culprit, but I can't get a proper hose clamp up there to replace the crappy pinch clamps.

Thanks again.

Only problem I see with bypassing it is that you won't have heat in the winter lol. It's also useful in bringing down the engine temp if it gets too high for some reason

Bypassing Rear Heater

Yes, I've thought of that, but I don't have kids, so really no-one sits in the back seats. I'd leave the main heater hooked up of course, just not the rear heater that runs ~1/4" lines to the back of the car....

Ahhhh gotcha. That makes sense then.

Bubbles in Coolant Reservoir

So after driving an hour at 3k RPM (70 MPH) and then parking and shutting the engine off I checked the reservoir and it had filled with coolant. I was watching to see if any was siphoned back into the radiator - but instead I started seeing bubbles!!! :censored: I can drive 20-30 minutes with no problems, but after 30 minutes at highway speeds I start having the coolant problems. I never overheats, but after it blows coolant it gets hot after shutting it off for 5 min. And if I idle (drive thru for instance) it starts creeping up on me - unless i rev it up a little to get the water pump moving. I also turn the AC on to get the condenser fan to kick on.

So from reading other posts I assume I have either a hairline crack in the head or a bad spot in the head gasket?? I'm ready to put a match to it, already put a new water pump/timing belt/radiator/axles/ball joint/brakes/muffler/tires/glass and some other small things. I also started sanding it so I can paint it - so I can't really sell it now because it looks like crap.

I really want to keep it since I put so much into it - but maybe I need to just let her go :(

Any thoughts?
TIA, -JJH

My 4th gen just started this. Unfortunately I haven't witnessed yet cause my father has been driving my 4runner around. His commute to our office is less than 2 miles and he states that coolant is spilling from the spill over tube. I checked and over flow is a bit full. Will diagnose to see what's going on. He says he didn't see if the temps increased or not but Ill be testing as my drive is a little further. Will report back to this thread.

Update:

So I checked the radiator cap first thing before leaving the office and found that the radiator cap and the spring were separated. Was able to pull the spring out, but where's the rest? Shouldn't there be rubber washers? It probably fell to the bottom of the end tank of the radiator.

I ran to an auto parts store and picked up a radiator cap and replaced the broken one. After about a mile commute down the road, I noticed the temps increasing really hot so I immediately pulled over at a liquor store, let the engine cool down, and checked the coolant. It was extremely low. Filled up with what the liquor store had, Peak 50/50. Drove home and everything looked good, except the car was still running kind of hot. It would fluctuate in the middle quite a bit from light to light. I decided hopped onto the highway for some more testing and noticed that at high way cruising speeds it would jump up to 3/4 of the way on the temp gauge in which I'd immediately hop off and the vehicle would cool back down.

When I got home I let the vehicle idle for about 15 minutes and there was no over heating issues. I touched the top radiator hose and it was hot but when I touched the bottom hose, it was cool. I am assuming that I might have a thermostat stuck closed so that's the next thing to replace. Will follow up.

Same issue here. My tank hose came off though so I'll be clamping that back on. I'm in the process of putting new head gaskets, water pump and thermostat in so I'll update in a few days once I'm back on the road. I knew the head gasket was bad as I used stop leak which held over the winter.

jumping in here with the same issues.

last year i have some major overheating issues coming back from a 2 week trip to sedona, truck ran great the whole trip except when coming back thru phoenix then it started getting bad.

After i got home, replaced the radiator with a high capacity racing radiator from CSF, i replaced the water pump, thermostat, radiator cap and fan clutch.

truck has been running great for a long time. recently have some new axle seals on and the put on about 800 miles in the past month and a half. up now at shaver lake in the sierras. doing some wheeling on local trails.

scangage shows and average of about 188-194 most days when driving.

when wheeling a couple times itll go up to 204 but then settle back down in the 190s.

yesterday went wheeling all day long, towards the later afternoon, the temp gauge would go up to 212 and and then drop back down, a few times it went up to 217 but the dash gauge is still in the normal range with no movement. i would. pause and just see if it would escalate and no the temp would go back down in the 190s.

this morning i popped the hood and noticed the same symptoms as mentioned before with coolant spray from the overflow tank. i checked the radiator and the radiator was still pressurized and air came out, grabbed a jug of coolant, and filled it up, was down a half gallon, while the overflow tank was filled to the brim.

i also removed the hose connecting the two and it was free of debris and clear.

ive also did the gas test in the coolant several months back and no hydrocarbons were present in the coolant. coolant is bright pink and the oil is clear as well.

anyone have any thoughts?

Hi Folks, forgive me for necro bumping this, I am new here and cannot post a new thread.

I am getting burbling behind the dash of my new 05, dreading the HG issue, but I thought I'd burp the coolant to see if it was just low since it was not gurgling on a cold start, only while it was running.

Come to find out my coolant reservoir pipe was disconnected from the cap and floating in the tank! I fished it out, along with a rubber o-ring gasket flange looking thing. Can anyone identify it and let me know how it is supposed to be installed with the hose?

I can't figure out if it is supposed to be in the tank wrapped around the hose, or sealing up the cap somehow.

Let us know if it fixed it, I hear that gurgling at times too, but it was for a montero 99
