Help Deciding on 5th Gen Purchase

Hi guys. I'm looking at finally getting into a 4runner and joining in on the outdoor fun. I have been doing a fair amount of reading on this forum. A ton of information!!

I have a few option I am debating on, hopefully someone can give me some advise.

1, There is a 2011 with 80k miles that is a SR5, they are advertising it as a 2011 Toyota 4runner 4wd dr v6 limited. It doesn't have leather or nav. It show that it has a locking rear differential which I thought was only on the Trail edition?

I am able to get this car for 25k out the door which seem like a pretty good deal.

2. 2011 Trail edition with 60k miles and they wanted 30K before tax and license. It does have KDSS, nav with jbl, and a few other option.

3. 2015 trail edition with nav, no moonroof (which is fine) going for 37800 msrp which I think I can get that down to 35k out the door. This doesn't look like it has KDSS on it.

I really like to get a trail edition since I could use some of the feature down the road. I rather have it then not have it I guess. My first choice would to be buy new but who doesn't want a shiny new toy. This car will be for weekend and fishing trip mostly hence why I'm looking at used more. That way I can save some money

Any input and suggestion is much appreciated.

For the price difference between the 2011 and 2015 Trail, I would get the 2015 if you can deal with that hideous front end. I would go new no matter what especially since you will know everything about the care given to the truck assuming you plan to keep it for the next 10-12 years.

thanks for your input AZrunner11. There aren't many trail edition in california so I might have to look outside the state. Since there aren't many they are holding their ground on pricing.

Good thing I have some patience to wait until I find one.

Weird. I see lots of TEs around here. Must be in your part of CA? I'm between sac and SF so, it might be good to look north.

cctt...i had a similar choice to make a few months ago...

2011 2010 SR5 or a 2014 SR5, but without moonroof or running boards.


i went with the 2014, because of all the same reasons, plus, new is new...and if you are going to keep it for the duration, like i am, then why not start from start, vs starting as the 2nd owner.

the 'agressive' front end grew on me, and having the entune system is pretty sweet too. and its always nice to walk to, get into, and drive around in a vehicle that you know only YOU have put miles on, mod'd, pushed thru the snow or mud or dirt, ect...

good luck with whichever vehicle you go with...you wont be dissappointed with any of them, i am confident of that :thumb:

thanks. I'm going with a 2015 trail without kdss but with nav so hopefully will get the paperwork start and make the 200 miles drive to pick it up soon.

i was up on the fence with the kdss. I really want it and found a 2011 trail with kdss for 29k otd but after reading about it....down the road it might need repair. Its one thing that can cause issue down the road. Some might and some don't but when it happens, its costly. The trail also has 60k on it.

Glad I went with a 2014 model. Didn't like it at first but when I was at the dealership debating whether I should go with a used 2012-2013 model or a new 2014/2015. Ultimately went with the current face-lift model. Whenever I park next to a 2010-2013 model they just looks so dated now. The new front end and tail lights do make it look more modern and current with the cars industry designs heavily based on sharp lines and curves.

i was unable to get it for 35k but got it for a little over 37. Thats the best I could do since every dealership I contacted that had a trail on the lot wanted 40 otd. I must have contacted over 10 dealership in a radius of 300 miles.

overall i'm very happy with the purchase. It drives great. Just have to get used to a big car.
