help diagnosing a problem

so the truck is a 97 4runner limited. basically when i break 50 my entire truck vibrates. or if i'm from 40 to 50 and i let off the acceleration, it does the same thing. i thought it might be the uneven wear on my old tires, but i got some goodrich at's yesterday and if anything, it's worse. :redbrick:

also, with my old tires if i wanted to drive above 45 i could just put it in 4wd and the vibrations would go away. with the new tires, it does the same thing in 2 and 4wd. is this some sort of transmission problem? or maybe i need new engine mounts? it's hard to explain but the vibrations are really bad, and it's like the whole truck is shaking.

Here are a few other areas that can cause vibrations.

Warped Brake rotors.
Front end alignment.
Wheel balance.
Worn steering components like inner and outer tie rods, upper and lower ball joints.
Driveshaft out of balance.

thanks for the info guys. the wheel balance should be fine, as the new tires were put on last night. brakes are also on the newer side, so i'm gonna tentatively cross that off the list. as for the other things, i'm a novice. any good ways for me to check that stuff out?

Check the ball joints by jacking up the front end and grabbing the tire at the 12 and 6 o'clock position and see if there is any play, and again at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions and repeat, if there is any play your ball joints may be worn. To check your U-joints grab the drive shaft and see if there is any play up and down, side to side and in and out, there should be minimal play in and out.

Who balanced your tires??? Don't immediately assume that it was done properly the first time. I discovered this the hard way. After paying Peerless and Sears to balance my brand new Blizzaks (Nov. 09), I still had vibrations and figured "Well, it must be something else" Turns out it was a combo of few different things, but having them properly balanced at Mountain States Toyota cured 90% of my vibration issues. The remaining 10% was composed of: endlinks, rack bushings, sway bushings. This was just my experience, so it may not hold true for you. Heres a link to my original thread.
