Hello everyone. I've been lurking around on this site for a while and am finally about to purchase my first 4Runner. I was hoping you guys could give me some advice of what I might need to pay specific attention to before I buy. Here's some info about the one I'm looking at:

1997 SR5 auto
little over 188,000 miles
one owner
dealer serviced rgularly (verified by calling)

TIA for any help you can give me.

You want to look underneath at the rear axle seals. Also verify that the timing belt and water pump have been serviced.

I know it had a timing belt at around 91K, so it's probably due for another one. How much does that usually cost? Is it something that I could do myself?

Were the rear axle seals a common issue?

Yeah, the axle seals were an issue. As far as the belt goes, I don't know your mechanical background, but yes, it is due. However, if it breaks, it will cause no damage to the 6 cylinder engine.

So I assume there would be some evidence of leakage around the axle seals?

I'm a fairly good wrench. I've done most of the work on my other cars; however I know enough to know when to take it to a pro. Good to know that it won't damage the engine if it breaks. I know that's a major concern with other "belted" engines.

Is 188,000 miles a lot for a 97 or will i get a long life out of it?
That is about the mileage I bought mine at. Mine is running strong, and I have done some SERIOUS offroading with it. These are very durable vehicles!!

Hi everyone, I'm kind of in the same boat here so I didn't see the need to start up another thread on a similar subject. vol4runner, I hope you don't mind and hello to WVA I have family in Weston!

I'm currently looking at a 96 SR5 fully optioned out including the rear locker, with around 165k miles. A little rough around the edges (paint on hood and roof is fading and interior trim kit needs replaced) but overall was well maintained, all major services done at dealership except for 3k mile oil changes at Jiffy Lube. Timing belt replaced in 07, drove great and overall seems like a sound vehicle. Miles are a little high but seems like it has been well taken care of so that doesn't scare me much and I even like the bizarre Anthracite Metallic color.

They are asking $6250, which obviously they are on crack because the KBB is around $5k. Anything specifically I should be looking out for on this model and what price would you offer if it were you?

Cheers,
Heidi

i dont think arizona should have rust problems... but everywhere else look at the insides of the chrome bumpers... and there WILL be rust... try that!
