Help! Fuel economy issue

I have an 86' and I have been trying to work on getting the fuel economy a little better. I have to travel alot every week for work and school and I cant afford to drive as she is now. She averages 13.2 mpg. I had fuel system cleaned out two months ago, and re-timed the engine back to stock settings. It's an auto so I drive with the ECT (Electronically Controlled Transmission) in Power mode. Normal mode can barely move the truck! What should I do? Gear the trans different? Smaller tires? I have 31x10.5" now. Any info would be a big help!

Well having the ECT on all the time is not going to help you with the MPG. You could check the spark plugs and wires. Smaller tires would help, but it isn't going to make that great of a difference and it will make your 4runner look weak. Gearing will help out. I would check to see what gears you have now. You can check the door jamb and look for the code. Gearratiosanddiffs It will be exspensive to change the gears, but could help return some power and mpg.

Thank you for getting back with me! It has 4.30 Gears on her now g282. I wanted to put 4.88's on but I cant fund a project like that until im done with college. (Soon I hope!) So I may just have to down size the tires for now unless you guys know where I can find cheap 4.88's or even 4.56's for that matter. Are stock tires 225P/70R-15?

They are 225/75/15 but you can do 235/75/15 as well. They will help, but look funny.
