HELP! Fuel filter disaster

New member
So bought a new fuel filter to replace my old never replaced filter. Pull off the old one easy as can be put on the new one and it leaks. I take it off 3 times and still leaks. So i put on the old one and it also leaks now. Questions could i of ruined the flanges by over tightening. It my only vehicle and need to fix asap. The leak is on the "in" side PLEASE HELP

Are you sure the threads aren't crossed or screwed up?

You do need to make it pretty darn tight for it to be leak free. I'm trying to think of some rtv or thread sealant that would be fuel-safe...
 
Push the fuel line all the way in. I had the same problem, nut tightened up good but it leaked. Took it off, pushed the line in more, retightened and it was leak free.
 
Just offering advice buddy. I'm not telling you to tighten it with the nut, I'm telling you to press fit the line in first then tighten it. Take it or leave it.
 
Don't be insulted, but you did use TWO wrenches to tighten up the nut, right? (We had a guy not too long ago who didn't know that basic mechanic technique..)
 
Did you use an OEM? I remember where some guy said the flanges from the fuel rails did not meet or seat correctly with his new filter (I think it was a Wix). You should be able to feel this and I would not tighten one nut until you know the flange is seated.
 
Great I bought a wix any advice on a better one that I can get at the advanced auto parts because that's all that is in walking distance
 
I helped a friend put on a Bosch one, and it has done fine for 40,000 miles.

Check to make sure both flanges are OK.

The 4runner, more than any other car I have owned, loves the OEM parts and little else.

Don't give up on the Wix just yet.
 
It's a WIX filter? Unless it's the wrong part number it'll seat. You said the OEM filter won't fit now either. I'm telling you, you don't have the fuel line aligned properly.
 
I'm gonna go at it again in the morning after an hour and a half of bathing in fuel I called it quit for the night
 
I put on a Wix a while back. I had to replace the short line since it wouldn't come out of the old filter (225K miles on it). I had to REALLY tighten the fittings down to get them to seal well (using 2 wrenches).
 
To get enough slack, make sure to push the rail divider for the front line and the brake lines as far front as possible for maximum mobility.
 
Just settle down man. Next time the fuel spills out just light up a nice warm tasty cigarette and relax. :D Everything will be OK!! :police:
