Help! Heater not working!

I have a 1990 4Runner v6 Limited with AC. My heater blows cold air. I ordered a heater core and it just arrived. It looks about 1/3 of the size of the core (if I'm looking at the right thing above the floorboard of the passenger side) in there. Is the heater core somehow connected/shared to the AC? The hoses in the engine compartment that the current core seem to be connected to have air outlets. Did they send me the wrong part? Am I looking in the wrong place for the core? How do I replace it? Please help!

Before changing your heater core, I'd check coolant levels, thermostat, and make sure that your engine is heating up. Often a lack of heat will be caused by a problem with the engine cooling system.

Also check to see if the heater control valve is opening when you move the temp slider. It should be located under the hood on the firewall near the center. Black valve in line with a black rubber hose with a cable attached to the top. The outlet heater hose is also located next to the inlet hose.
