So left for DV this morning driving down highway at 70 all of a sudden hearing a clanking sound. Pull over, driving slowly sounds like I have a lug nut rolling around in a hubcap on driver front side. Checked everything else no leaks or obvious things wrong. Is this my driver cv going bad? No cv w/me but only 100 miles from home if it's the cv can I limp it home and fix there?
Thankso:uzi:

you usually only here cv sounds while turning but its possible. try jacking up that corner and spinning the left front by hand. might help you see what is making the noise. hope that helps.

First. The CV joint, hub side, is always turning; If I am correct. Unless you installed a warn or asin manual hub - then the cv wheel side will always be turning. The differential side is where the transfer case will lock into gear or not. It is possible for a cv joint to go out, while not engaged in the differential, but to go out from the turning at the wheel.

Impact. Almost none, right now. Your truck, I am assuming, is 4x4; meaning it usually operates in rear drive with the engine power going through the main drive shaft to your rear wheel. You can drive home with a busted cv joint if you have to, as you are not using it to move the car.

I don't know if it is, and driving home may continue to bust your front CV joint; but they are pretty inexpensive to replace.

Ok, update. After jacking it up spinning the wheel, pulling it. I think the dust shield is causing the noise. Just replaced the rotors and backing plates now deem to be rubbing. Loose. Where are the bolts to tighten the dust shields, behind the rotors?

Bolts for the dust shield are behind the rotors. The dust shield can be adjusted a little bit as I found out a few days ago while doing the Tundra upgrade. There are 4 bolts.

You should be able to bend the dust shield if it's minor rubbing.

Also if it's rubbing on the little lip that sticks out in the dust shield where the caliper goes you might be able to give it a yank on the dust shield away from the caliper to get it to stop rubbing. I know that in one of the threads on the 231's the guy had to grind his down 1mm (I would describe it as the middle of a "W"). On mine one rotor cleared the rotor fine, but the other side didn't. I loosened the 4 bolts and was able to shift it enough that it no longer rubbed, which saved me a lot of time since my dremel sucked.

Ok, have to head back home, since I don't have enough tools to pull off spacers. Deal with it in the garage. I noticed I do have a little bit of movement pull-push in the 6 and 12 oclock position. Should there be a little bit of movement with wheel in the air?

Glad you figured it out when i first got my runner the dust shield gave me a couple scares too. lol. Rocks get stuck in it easy.
