HELP. Key sticking in ignition

Hello, I'm a new user from oakland with a 1997 T4R limited. I've been having trouble when turning off the engine with my key sticking in the ACC position. I've already changed the cylinder and that didn't do the trick. It doesn't happen every time but when it does I have to start the engine and quickly turn the key to the off position. any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like the lock is confused and thinks you're not in P.

This happened on my old 87 Mercedes and it happens every so often with the 4Runner. Simply cycle from P to L, then back. Usually fine after that, assuming you don't actually have a real problem.

Worth a try if it happens again.

Sounds like the park sensor switch is either bad or the linkage has come loose as mine did a few months back. Pull the center console up to expose the linkage and the switch is on the passenger side. Very simple little piece. If I remember correctly, there should be 3 screws or tiny bolts holding it in position.

Move the shifter, is it engaging the switch enough or at all?

Try actuating it manually and removing the key at the same time.

Ok, I have a 99 SR5 and have been having the key stuck problem for some time now. It has gotten so bad I have to do something about it but every shop I talk with says I need to replace the ignition. All along I never thought it was the ignition but something to do with the shifter or the shifter lock.
Now, to fix this can someone please tell me how to get the shifter open and the steps to go over to ensure I get it correct. Do I need to replace any parts when I have the shifter open?
