Looking to buy a 4Runner soon. Not wanting to spend a ton because I would like money to put into it. I think i found a perfect starter but need opinions

I found a 98 Limited with elocker. brand new tires (not the best but will do)
it has about 171k on it now. New brakes and rotors up front. engine just purrs and runs real nice also new front shock/struts and battery. I cant think of what else right now.

the only thing is, it is a little rough, dirty inside, has some surface rust underneath and two small spots on the liftgate,

the rear window works and the sunroof works, i didnt check the the other windows, AC was cold, and everything else seemed to work, besides the antenna and the clock. no big deal.

It had good pep to it and ran nice down the highway, to vibrations or anything all the way up to about 75

the steering was extremely tight, no play what so ever.

Anyway I will post pics when I can. I think I could get this thing for less than $4,000, which seems like a sweet deal i could buy it clean it up and sell it for profit if I wanted to. I have read the thread about what to look for and such and will read again before laying down the cash, i just wanted some other opinions please.

sounds decent you should get some pictures of it up so we can look over it, and it all depends where you live some people cant buy a vehicle with absolutely no surface rust like others, 170,000 isnt to bad mine has that many and still runs like new, as long as the maintenance was done on it like oil changes and fluids changed, timing belt water pump and so on undercoating will take car of surface rust and the right cleaner/steamer will make the inside clean up nice

There are a lot of good options around us...Louisville and Cincy included. I'll look some up and post them when i get a chance. I look around our area every day, and we actually have a pretty decent selection.

thanks for posting those! I have already looked at those online as well. the black one caught my eye the most but cost the most too. I am doing this as a budget, what I get from my Caddy is what I will spend. no more. hopefully less actually.

After I get one we should hit some trails.

You'd be real lucky to find a car in the Midwest without some sort of rust issues. I got lucky with mine but still will be taking POR15 to the entire frame this fall as a preventative measure. I wouldn't worry about interior filth as long as it can be cleaned up. Rust, TB/WP, and tranny conditions are the most critical. Go buy it and get some Treadwrights so you can spend money on other mods. Have fun wheeling.

That's what I was thinking too. Think I will take the next offer I get on my car and get the 4runner I've been dealing on. I already got the guy $2,000 under fair blue book value. If anything I could clean it up and make money on it.
