Hey ya'll, long time lurker, first time poster, and love all the info you guys have! I have been a happy owner of 2000 Toyota 4runner limited, 4WD Auto, 3.4L 5VZ-FE V6 since I drove it off the lot for the last 120,000 miles. Have done regular oil change every 5-10k with mobil1, and new timing belt in '07. My cat converter went bad about 2-3 years ago, so I've had to reset ECU before inspection each time cuz its a dual cat system for Cali emissions, which is wayy overpriced imo. New 02 sensors did nothing, so that's why i left it unchanged. CEL has been on this whole time, but performance/mpg has been great, until now.
Recently, some new issues cropped up, and engine feels sluggish, almost restricted, at rpms over 3k, and acceleration is poor above 3k. When I reach about 50mph, the Overdrive gear kicks in i believe, but it feels pretty rough, and a lot of stuttering is felt. It's jolting, and you can feel the power loss. Also can hear it misfire when accelerating hard, and check engine light blinks alot. Once I get to around 55 the stutter goes away, unless i gas it hard again and more misfires happen.
I took it to my mechanic, and he got a bunch of error codes: p0171, p0300, p0301, p0302, p0420
He thinks the cat is breaking down and clogging the exhaust, causing engine to run lean, causing misfires, and poor performance. The stutter with the OD gear could be the trans or torque converter going bad. I'm now debating if i should dump alot of money to replace the cats, 02 sensors, plugs, coils, wires and all fuel injectors and hope the trans issue goes away. My mechanic thinks the trans could go bad soon and suggests selling the car while its still running.
Sorry this is so long. What do you gurus think? Could the trans issue go away? is it even a trans issue? Thanks for your input!
