Help me decide on a skid plate please.

So i am about to upgrade my skid plate. I really like the TRD pro skid but im afraid it may be just cheap stamped sheet metal? Here are the few im considering

TRD Pro $280
RCI 3/16” steel 40 lbs $275
RCI 1/4” aluminum 20 lbs $325
Shrockworks 3/16” steel 42 lbs $310

The TRD Pro is 1/4" aluminum, but i do like the RCI aluminum also.

I got the shrockworks steel belly and it's really nice heavy steel and made well But it's nice heavy steel. If you are planning on bouncing off it get steel. If you don't want to bounce on it and just use it for Ooops sake get aluminum. Or if you live in rocky terrain where if you do tap, it would be a rock vs mud or berms.

I do like the RCI bolt guards and the schrockworkds doesn't have those.

I have given my TRD PRO skid a few good hits so far and it has taken it nicely. I do want to do a full RCI package eventually though.

The TRD Pro is 1/4" aluminum, but i do like the RCI aluminum also.

TRD skid plate is far from being a cheap stamped sheet metal. It does have some weight to it.

RCI does make it convenient to do oil changes, but I like to take my skid plates off to wash down the underside thoroughly. You be surprised where sand and mud will end up.

As other said it here, it all depends what your uses are.

TRD pro is plenty for most people. Mine took a few hard hits and held well. I’m keeping it. Steel is just a weight penalty until you actually NEED it.

If you have KDSS be ready to modify to fit

The TRD plate is a quality 1/4” Aluminum plate. The biggest difference between it and the RCI Aluminum is that the RCI extends back further. If you eventually do full Skids in the future you will have to get an integration skid to fill the gap between the front and transmission skid.

Make sure to look at the Bud Built skids. I have combination of steel and Aluminum. They are well made.

I don't think you can go wrong with those options but my preference is RCI Alu. - I have everything but the gas tank skid and they have taken a beating and held up fine/done their job.

The TRD plate is harder aluminum than most aftermarket. That said, unless you plan on routinely beating it on rocks, aluminum will do its job, which is to prevent damage to running gear.

I got the filler plate, too. I considered aluminum, but I seem to be using my skids....

I’d suggest figuring out whether you want aluminum or steel first and the figure out, where to go from there. You also need to think about if you want additional skids. If so, you should probably go RCI or budbuilt.

I got steel Bud Built engine and transmission and then aluminum for transfer case and gas tank. Before getting my lift, it was really hard to not smash into things with the low KDSS front end.

Here is my BB front end after a bit of use. Cant see it from this angle, but the steel is bent in at an impact area.

XO runs these on one of their 4Runners. They look the same as steel. I don't remember the price but I found out about the Al option the day my CBI steel sliders were delivered (or I would have bought the AL version). I don't remember the price, but the weight was something like 25 lbs each. So basically half of the steel version. Next time.

I currently have the TRD front skid on my 2018 TRD Off Road. I'm considering the RCI transition skid along with the tranny and transfer skids in aluminum. Any other companies have TRD compatible skids? Does RCI have a forum discount?
