Help me decide on tires

Treadwrights. Treadwrights! TREADWRIGHTS!!!!

23K on mine. Over 50% tread remaining. Noisy. $427 shipped to my door (265/75/16). Good luck!
 
Just called TreadWright and they said they are at least 3-6 weeks out. I'm still leaning towards the Coopers or DuraTracs. One thing that is interesting is the Coopers are 34.4 tall and the DuraTracs are 34.8 tall. But the Coopers have 20/32nds of tread depth and the DuraTracs have 18/32nds

Not to jump on the bandwagon or anything but I recently pulled the trigger on the oh so popular Duratracs. I figured if this many people liked em I would to right? Well yeah, I freaking love them! I have never driven any of the other tires previously mentioned but the Duratracs went above and beyond my expectations. They perform better then I thought they would and ride much better and quitter then I feel they should.
 
I had the Cooper STT's for a few months and they were awesome offroad. I had 0 issues in the thick mud when I was wheeling and they hooked up real well. Mine were cupped so they were loud, but they drove smooth enough and were a good looking tire. Also the sidewall is strong, which the duratracs seem to have issues with.
 
If you will be doing any highway driving, I'd consider any new tire over a Treadwright retread.

Consider that a tire starts to slowly deteriorate from the moment it's made. Tire engineers have said that it is prudent to closely look at tires that are 5 years old for any signs of deterioration thus needing replacement, regardless of remaining tread depth. There is a verifiable track record of old tires failing without warning, with deadly results.

So Treadwright takes a tire that has been rolling down the road for maybe 5+ years, hitting who knows how many potholes, likely running under-inflated heating and aging the carcass more quickly, and then shaves the remaining tread, and puts on a new tread cap.

The tread cap is new, but the carcass of the tire is still old.

I've seen a few Treadwright tire stories on fourwheeling boards wherein the tire came apart at highway speeds, (in one case destroying a nice 80 series Landcruiser) despite the owner claiming the tire was not under-inflated.

You can do as you wish, but I wouldn't even consider a retread for anything but an off-road only trail rig.

Ive driven on 2000 mile road trips and never had an issue with a treadwright. I can find more blowouts and tread ripping off of BFG or any other major company. If you call up treadwright they have had almost zero issues with tread coming off. They have had where maybe one or two lugs tore off during hard offroading and they actually replaced the tire for the customer. Last time I researched I found maybe one or two guys complaining about treadwright but no tire company goes without complaints or failures.

In many instances a retread can be more safe than an actual new tire since its gone through so many inspections to make sure the rubber is good and new. There is a video somewhere online where some reporting agency went into tire companys and found that some tires could actually sit in a warehouse for 5+ years before the customer even gets them and they can be more dangerous since they have not gone through inspection. Even more so for tires that are not used as OEM tires since they sit on shelves for a long time. Treadwright gets almost all the walls from tire companys that are replacing the OEM's so they are off of new trucks. Thats why they barely have any 15's since all trucks now have 16+ rims. They talked how retreading is done and its almost identical too a new tire except it goes through a lot more inpsections making sure the rubber is good. Meaning that new tire at the tire shop could be worse than the retread since no one will reinspect it.

Retreads get a bad rap because truckers will run them for 100000+ miles till they tear apart, but any tire would tear apart from that abuse. My tires have always lasted 50k miles. They have always worn great and had awesome traction. Expecially if you go with the kedge grip. I run them, my dad, mom, brother, uncles, friends. I have gotten over 20 people at my work to purchase them over the years. I dont know anyone that would buy another tire.

I've just learned to accept that some people will always feel uneasy about treadwrights. No worries, more for me. All I'll say is that if anyone is REALLY interested in finding the truth, spend the time and do the work. You'll find that there is no evidence that they are any less reliable than other tires. BTW, my second vote is for the Coopers.
 
Stay away from TW. Those morons shipped me 2 tires that were slashed, hassled me with their warranty paperwork, and said normally they dont cover such claims.

I reminded them they sold me tires, and a tire has to be mountable to be sold as a tire. The slashes were down to the metal cords.

Waste of time, any savings were used up dealing with TW and FedEx.

Brian2sun tried to buy 315/75r16 treadwrights and they really suck at customer service. I believe they said the same BS 4-6 weeks and after 12 weeks of waiting with no solid answer of when they were going to be in he cancelled the order.

I say goodyear MTR kevlars. I got mine shipped with certs for right around $1000 Couldnt be more happy. My friend has the same size on his taco and wheels it all the time. a few weeks ago he told me has 30,000k on them with 7/32 left... Good luck with that on any other mt.

My last ket of km2s had 11/32 when i sold them and just at 10K miles. Horrible wear.

I personally wanted Irocks but its hard to find swampers now. Im just as happy as I could be with the MTRs.

What Brian went through is exactly what i am afraid of. Once i get my tax refund, i need to pretty much spend it on the tires because i know that if i have to sit on it for awhile, i'll just end up spending it elsewhere. And i sure as hell don't want to pay for the tires if they don't have something better than a estimate

The MTR's are actually my first choice but the price was out of my range. If you tell me where you got them for $1000 shipped, i'll be your best friend forever and ever.

I have wanted the 315 MTR ever since i saw them on Scuba's Taco.
 
Hoping u get the kelly's cuz i have them and i'm curious how they handle hardcore offroading/ airing down etc :) They have been great for me offroad so far but i dont wheel like u guys. I like how they arent real loud and the price was 1000 out the door at discount. Also the guy at discount said they were a pain in the ass to mount cuz the sidwalls and said i could air them way down and be good.

Calling them would be futile, I would think. It's in their best interest not to acknowledge problems. I'm sure they don't hear about every problem customers might have, either.

New tires go through extensive inspections all the way through the manufacturing process. Every part of the tire is new at that point in time, not just the tread cap.

I agree that tires can be several years old, and still be sitting waiting to be sold as new in tire shops. That's why I always check the build date on any new tire I'm looking to buy. I won't buy a tire that was made over a year prior. On the 4Runner I won't buy a tire that's over six months old, because I drive it so little, that the tires will get old and dry rot, before the tread ever wears out due to mileage.

A set of Treadwrights were shipped to a buddy with carcasses that were nearly four years old. But they had a new tread cap applied to the old carcass. That's a carcass that's nearing the time when much closer attention should be paid to signs of deterioration.

Truckers generally pay much closer attention to their tires than somebody that's just commuting back and forth to work every day.

For me, retreads are false economy. But I do hope whoever runs them does so without incident.

My only point in posting, was to express the potential downside of retreads.

For anyone that drives on snow even somewhat often, duratracs are unbeatable. Not to mention its still an amazing all terrain. Its the only tire I will ever consider.

Now that I have found the perfect tire.. all I have to think about is which size to get! :D

Sorry to hear that. My customer service experience was just fine. Satisfied with the product. Satisfied with the service. I can only account for myself, though. As for the 315's, I would be frustrated too. It sounds like they just don't carry the inventory so delivery estimates are unreliable. I would think they would eliminate that option until they can fill their pipeline sufficiently.
