Help Me Fall Back In Love With My 4Runner

So I'm really thinking about selling my 2006 Sport V8 4x4 for a smaller, manual transmission, sporty car but I just bought the 4Runner 8 months ago and I know I'll be losing tons of money turning a car around that quick.

Can you guys please help me to fall back in love with my 4Runner?

I hate taking it on trips because the mileage kills me, I pretty much hate driving it because it sucks so much freaking gas, especially now that gas prices are so high. I used to look forward to driving my old car everytime I got in it (G35) but I just don't feel that way at all anymore...

Doesn't sound like there's anything you like about it, sell it so someone else can love it!
 
if you dont wanna lose money you might just have to suck it up for a few years. i notice your sig says 4wd, try taking it offroad and maybe you'll get into that and fall back in love with it
 
I understand that you have a "bad marriage" but divorce will be costly. We can act as 'Marriage Counselor", but eventually it is you who will have to work it out. :wink2:
 
I know how you feel about the gas, just bought my '04 V8 4WD less than a month ago. Gets better mileage than the ****ty '93 S10 Blazer 4wd I had. But 18 ~ 19 isn't all that much better than 16. I say hang onto it and use it for fun and utility until you can afford the gas to drive it regularly. I love my 4runner even if the cost to fill her up is expensive.

I the end its your choice, but you have it now and it may be a pain in the ass to find it again should you decide you want one again in the future.
 
sporty car, manual trans... if i had one of those the Gas MPG would be just as bad as my 4runner.


take the few thosand bucks you would loose on trading it in and buy a jet ski, boat or quad. :)

If you don't take it offroad and don't tow, then you've got the wrong vehicle and you should trade it on something that gets better mileage and is more fun to drive. I put up with the road manners of my gas sucking 4Runner, but that's because it gets me here:

Buy a motorcycle. Use it on the nice days for plenty of fun, and great gas mileage. On the off days, drive the 4Runner. You can pick up almost any class of bike for cheap. You have to enjoy riding though!

If you add up what you have invested total, and then figure out your true cost of ownership, it would probably take you many years to save money by buying a more eco friendly car when compared to the loss you will take by selling the 4Runner. I know, I have lost big time over the years by buying and selling cars.

With that said, keep yourself happy in your choices, if that leads you to sell, then do it.

From my test drives, the ''road manners'' aren't any worse than your average grocery getting sedan and certainly as good or better than the standard SUV or crossover.

In fact, me and my wife prefered the on road manners to my Accord and even her Pontiac G6 v6 sedan.

(I agree that its no ''sports car'' though...)

I disagree. It rides pretty well, for a truck. It handles pretty well, for a truck. It brakes pretty well, for a truck. But I will never mistake it for anything other than a body-on-frame, solid-rear-axle truck.

Every time I drive Mrs. M1911's C300 or almost any rental car, I am reminded of just how badly my 4Runner handles. Last year, while traveling, I spent a week in a Ford Fusion and another in a Hyundai Sonata, and the turn in those cars had just runs rings around a 4Runner.

Don't get me wrong, I like my 4Runner for what it does. And it is better than other trucks that I tested. But it is a truck, not a car.
 
I know how you feel. I go back and forth about regretting my choice to (recently) sell my Z. it got at least 21 city and it was fully modded; was way too fast ; and was a less costly car to buy. Anyway, I've had my 4th Gen for only a few months and see how it goes when the summer rolls around.

I completely agree. A z is a great car on the street since that is what it was designed for. If you want to love your runner take it where it was designed to go, offroad. Youre not going to love it if you keep testing it at what the z was muuuch better at.
 
Selling your truck because of the gas mileage is the worst move you can do, if you want to save money in a long run. When I was young I always wanted Jetta because it's so good on mileage, but in reality the most economic car is not the one that good on gas but the one that rarely brakes (very reliable) and most of the people still have hard time to figure it out. I would trade your truck for mine in a heartbeat. Good luck! :driving:
 
Our 4runners can go practically anywhere.

Cars cannot.

That's how I look at it, and I don't even go offroading, I just drive on the beach to go fishing. But I like that option to be there for the one day I decide to explore a little.

Personally, I don't have the need for speed, the speed limit is pretty much the same no matter where you go, so sports cars don't appeal to me.
 
If you bought a 2006 8 months ago, then i am assuming its used? If thats the case, then you wont be losing a lot of money.

I bought it new 3.5 years ago and i am thinking along the same lines as you. But the difference is i love my 4runner. Its the gas price thats putting a pinch.In fact i spent the last weekend at auto dealers trying to get a used Acura or a BMW(friends insistence, as he has one). Then i would think of the bad roads that i will be driving these cars in and i would back out. And of course they cited gas prices and tried to lowball me on my 4 runner. Thats when i decided not to give it up, but pay it off and keep it and in a few years get a used sports sedan for fun. I have put too much effort and care in maintaining my solid guy and i cant just give it away.

But recent news suggests that OPEC is going to increase production which should bring the prices down.

I dont do off roading at all, but then roads here are as bad as off roading. Bumps, crevices, warped roads due to heat, gas stations that suddenly rise above the road like a hill. Not the ideal conditions to drive a refined sports sedan. But if the roads are good where you live, then its different.

I had sports sedans before and the roads here ruined the experience for me. The constant clunking of the wheels and shocks on bad roads, means i am literally tearing the car apart over due course of time and sure enough, after a while all the nice cars i had started rattling (VW Passat, Acura TL..etc). Heck my shocks are leaking just driving on highway and i have to replace them sometime this weekend. Think about what it would do to a car.

So thats why i got the 4 runner. 3.5 years of driving and not a single rattle. I thought i found one and it turned out to be my sunglasses in my overhead compartment. Plus a bad back is what made me buy a SUV.

I am trying to find some off road trails here myself so i can put the vehicle to its intended use.

I do have a motorcycle that i will use when the weather clears up.

Given the current state of budgets of almost all states, cops are all over the place trying to give you a ticket for the flimsiest excuse. So enjoying a sports car sounds nice but not practical. A country our size doesnt have an autobahn and it should. The land of cars and the worlds largest market for automobiles has the speed limit fixed at 70 !

I went from a 350z to a g35 sedan to the 4runner. So far the 4runner is great. Yes the mileage is a little worse, and no its not a sports car but it's more practical and a better vehicle for me at this point in my life. At some point when money picks up I'm going to buy a corvette or another Z and go the whole built block twin turbo route
