Hi all. New here, hope I've got the right forum?
I've just taken back possession of my '86 4runner from my brother. I won't get into the details, but to make a long story short he killed it about 5 years ago and it's been sitting since. I grilled him about what exactly happened when it died, and he told me to the best of his knowledge:
On the freeway, started making a ruckus, loud knocking. About the time he got to the right lane, he lost power, tho the engine was still turning over. A couple seconds after that, engine cut out. He doesn't recall hearing any significant noise accompanying the engine dying (no clang, crack, boom, etc). After getting the truck on the side of the road, he turned the key, engine would not turn over. He popped the hood, nothing appeared out of place. Checked the oil, level was below the stick. Looked under the truck - no fresh oil. Hiked back up the road. No oil on the road. Went and got new oil, put it in the truck, still wouldn't turn over. Power and all appeared fine, doesn't remember if the solenoid was clicking or not. He towed the thing home, when he got there the engine would turn over but wouldn't fire. Block was holding oil fine. He tells me he checked for spark and that was good, but didn't do much else. And now you know as much as I do.
It's in my driveway now. I don't even qualify for shade-tree mechanic status, and am hoping that something in the above rings a bell with somebody who can point me in the right direction.
It's an automatic with the 22re engine, and that's as much as I know until I run the VIN. It's been sitting for 5 years, so before I do anything else I'll check the battery, change the oil, pour some fuel dryer in the tank. If it's still doing like he says it was, I think I can figure out how to check for spark at the plugs and Autozone probably has a compression tester, a little research tells me that's not a hard test. After that, though, I'll be completely lost (I'm only mostly lost now). Any ideas?
