Help me With my sqeek!

Ok, I changed the rear u joint,
I greased all zerks
I filled the driveshaft extending thing with grease.
Had tire shop check my driveshaft and they say my driveshaft looked fine.

It doesn't do it normally on acceleration, mainly on coasting, not at high speeds, when drivin with door open it sounds as though it's coming from under the truck. This truck has had a suspension lift for who knows how long, it also had a 3"bl and 35" tires so this truck has been through some.

Does the noise correlate with engine speed or vehicle speed? What sort of things affect it besides acceleration and high speed? Is it worst right when you let off the gas, when just starting to coast? What happens when you let it coast down from highway speeds to a stop? Does it get increasingly worse as you slow down?

For the last couple of weeks, I went through the same thing. It ended up being my driveshaft, but it took pulling it and greasing it manually (instead of through the zerk fittings) because apparently there was an entire section that had gone almost completely dry.

If your driveshaft checks out fine, here's a list of all the other suggestions people gave and other things I checked out:

Brake pad wear indicators
Foreign object stuck in brake mechanism
Drive belt (either old or misaligned)
Drive belt pulley/ bearing
Power steering pump
Power steering pump pulley misaligned
U-Joint
Wheel bearing
Differential

I would start checking these things to rule them out one-by-one. Good luck and keep us posted...

I would lift each tire off the ground and spin it by hand to see if it's a wheel bearing making the noise and also shake the tire to see if it wobbles while in the air.

cant jack up or look for the squeek right now,

but i noticed.

it squeaks lighty on deceleration and heavy on light acceleration.


any ideas

check the rear sway bar- mine was twisted and rubbing ever so slightly-drove me nuts until found and replaced.

Mine did the same thing a couple years ago at about 150K miles. It would squeak softly on light acceleration and loudly when I took my foot off the gas. It ended up being the driveshaft, or more specifically one of the U-Joints. I had it replaced. Had I been more saavy or had more time to mess around with it, I probably could have solved the problem like RichardLee and disassembled/lubed/reassembled the whole thing myself. But alas, the new driveshaft works just as well considering the time I did not have. I make sure I lube the darn thing now. It probably went bad because I didn't lube it for all those miles.
