I recently bought my 4Runner and I felt, as I now own a truck, I should have some recovery gear on hand. I bought a 3"x30' tow strap, thinking I probably wouldn't need it until I get out into the woods. Well, it snowed a couple days ago and I ended up being needed to pull a friend out of a ditch. It's lucky that I bought the tow strap so early on. The problem is, I didn't have some other gear that would have made the job ideal. Because my tow strap was so long, and his car was so low to the ground, he looped the strap around a secure suspension component. After a little tugging, I now have some fraying in the middle of my new tow strap.
I plan to get a length of chain... In the future, if I need to tow from a potentially abrasive "thing", I will loop the chain around it and link that to the strap. I'm thinking of getting a ~10 foot piece of chain with a gated tow hook on one end, then place 3 shackles along the rest of the length. That would allow me to loop 'something' and hook into one of the shackles. Then, I can shackle the other end of the chain to the tow strap.
Is this a good solution? What setups/accessories do you guys use, or keep handy? What other issues should I plan for, when needing to do simple towing of a car from a ditch?
Is 3/8" chain sufficient for this, or what?
