Help: Motor-type noise when vehicle turned off????

Last night was night 21 and my last night sleeping in my 2018 TRDORP during my Wyoming/Montana adventure. I was woken at 3 AM by a strange motor/mechanical noise. Eventually figured out that it was coming from my car--even though the car had been turned off for hours. The noise was from the rear of the vehicle, on the underside.

I'm sure that I looked like a complete idiot (had anyone seen me), outside in the Mojave desert in the dark of the night in my underwear, with a flashlight and my iPhone, climbing under my car.

So what is this noise?? And how does my car make noises like this when it is turned off, and has been for hours?????

my '14 does that on occasion. I believe it has some thing to do with evap system. Dont hold me to that tho some one with more knowledge will chime in and let us know for sure. Ive walked in my garage at 5:30 am to that noise only a few times. Turn key on it and it quits in a few seconds.

Evap system-they all do it.

Right after we got our 2016 I heard that noise in the garage and thought the thing was going to go up in flames. Ha!

But after searching this forum I found out it is a normal sound and it is even mentioned in the owners manual.

The adventure is over... last night was the 21st and last night in the car. Had a fabulous 3 weeks in Wyoming and Montana. Now I’m home—having a Moose Drool and a filet. Just wish I’d been smart enough to bring some elk home!

the evaporative emissions system has a built in vacuum pump that will run after approximately 5 hours of key off time. It is completely normal and planned for by the manufacturer.

Interesting tid bit... when they first introduced the trd blower on the 4.0 there were a lot of people complaining because the circuit that powers up the vacuum pump for this self test was the same fuse that TRD had decided to tap into for their remote water pump for that system. So, there were a LOT of people complaining that there was an even louder noise in the front of the vehicle now (the electric water pump for the s/c) I even saw one story a guy was working on his truck when it went off the first time and he got a concussion from becoming scared and whacking his head on his steel bumper :X

Huh. Thank you all.

I kept waking around 4 AM during the trip, and could never figure out why... but that would have been more than 5 hours after turning the car off...

Yup normal operation. The system is testing for very small evaporative emission system leaks and comparing the evap system pressure sensor readings to ambient pressure to diagnose if there is a leak or not.
