Help My 4runner lose's power when take off im stumped

Hi i bought the for 1400 bucks it had a bad power loss problem so i had it put in the shop they said it was a bad head that 2 and 4 was'nt fireing so i bought a refab head and had them put it on well chargeing me $780 it run better but still something else was wrong cause it will take off like normal then all sudden just fall and lose's a bunch of HP so i took it back to the shop and they stuck a crank sensor on it and replaced the Cat and charged me $360 and i got it back and still did'nt fix crap same problem as before and they test drove it and acted like it was a 4 cly auto and thats all the power it would get so i said screw it i wasnt paying them any more money not to fix the problem so now im left trying to fix it my self which is what i should had did in the first place.

So heres a break down of whats been changed its a 4cly 2wd 4runner

refurb Head
plugs
plugwires
coil pack
cat converter
crank sensor
and i swap MAF's out and didnt fix so i took the new MAf back for a refund.

I dout its a mechanical problem im thinking its something electrical cause like if its cold i can start the 4runner and drive just fine for a few mins then something stals and holds it back. And sum times i can stop at stop sign then it will take off real fast then all sudden just fall's So do u guys have any idea what it could be?

Do you have a check engine light on? Take it to a local auto parts store that does the free scans and ask them to pull the codes and see what comes out. Sounds like it may be a coolant temp or an air/fuel sensor...
 
update i just checked it with my odb-2 scanner and sure enough there where 5 codes. someone took out the light so the CEL light wont show up.

the codes are

po100
po115
po135
po325
po325pd

P0100 - MAF circuit malfunction
P0115 - ECT circuit malfunction
P0135 - O2 Sensor Heater Circuit malfunction
P0325 - Knock Sensor Circuit Malfunction

You got a lot more work to on your 4R.
 
i think the MAF cel was set when i unpluged it i swaped them probly triggerd the cel.

im going to say the problems comeing from this

ECT circuit malfunction


cause i can start it when its cold and it drive just fine i can drive it for a bit then when it starts getting hot then thats when its starts loseing power
 
Yeah these don't all sound like current codes though...clear them and drive it for a few days and scan it again...see which ones come back, if any
 
ok cleared codes and drove it i only got these now


P0135 - O2 Sensor Heater Circuit malfunction

so my ? is how would i know which O2 is bad? and why is is listed p0135 and p0135 pd?

im going to think its the O2 bad thats setteing off the knock cause the O2 effects fuel and air and since its effected its makeing the knock read bad so im going to change O2 first then clear codes and see what happens.

A knock sensor tells the engine computer when one or more of your engine's cylinders are "knocking", that is, exploding the air/fuel mixture in a way that delivers less power
 
Ok fixed the O2 sensor the wires to where broke off the plug so i cut the harness and wired them derict and it worked :) it has more hp now i think it was the problem. I got 1 code left on and its the knock sensor im going to try to locate it and change it out and see if it fixs everything

I doubt its been covered here but pop over to CustomTacos and search for GM knock sensor. Apparently they are cheaper and last longer and I think its a pretty easy swap.

Well today I pulled out the stock Knock sensor that has been giving me my CEL and crappy preformance or total lack of and replaced it with a mid to late 1980s knock sensor just as PIMPINTACO had mentioned. It came with what looked like a 1/4" NPT thread and I rethreaded it with a 12mm 1.25 pitch metric die and it threaded into the block just perfect. Hooked up the wire and bolted the fuel filter back on, along with the tire. Cleared the CEL and took it for a run. PERFECT! No CEL and after a little fuel adjustment, runs as strong if not better than before. Might be running a little more advanced timing I'm guessing due to the fact that this Knock sensor isn't as sensitive as the Toyota one? With the wideband I'm confident that its dialed in pretty close. If anyone has Knock sensor problems on the 2.4L I totaly recomend this mod, plus might give you a bit more power for the low price of 60$. Thanks for the help

Yeah i found them on ebay for $53 shipped thats for the knock sensor. From what i read they look like a pita to change its right under the intake manifold in the back and i crawled under it and i cant even see it from the bottom of the turck or the top so i bet its going to be a pain to get to.
 
Ok guys thanks for your help i wouldnt had been able to fix it w/o your tips.

I inspcted the knock sensor and sure enough it was'nt even hooked up so i check the plug and it was gone so i bought a but connecter and rigged it up and it worked :) it runs great now no loss of power of nothing. I wish i would had came here first before paying the retrded shop $360 to fix it which they just added a bunch of shlt did'nt need and charge me for it :mad: but im glad i got it running :)

Dude, you should go back to that shop and ask for at least some of your money back. At LEAST for the labor. The fact that they threw a lot of expensive parts at it without even scanning it is pure incompetence, and you should call them on it.
 
In the future, the first thing you should check when this happens is the Catalytic converter. Glad you got it fixed. SOmetimes these sensors can be a PITA.
 
Yeah now i own this 4runner as well as a 97 limited 4x4 that i scored for 2,200 with bad plug and wires it runs great :) But my 2wd that had in the shop well its running crappy again its got a code on for the EGR value. Which i cant seem to find and the code says u wont notice any driven issues but i can tell its sluggish and dosent want to pull hills to well. When im going up any hill or trying to pass i have to turn the o/d button off just to get more HP this wasnt like that till the EGR started acting up. Have u guys had any issues with the EGR and if so how would one go about fixing it? On a side not i took a whole EGR box thingy out of a 97 tacoma i had for parts and swapped it on the 4R but it didnt fix a thing :(.
