HELP! need WIDER tires!

I'm new to this forum and am lovin' it so far! My dad has a 2003 Limited 4runner and his crappy Dunlops are finished. He wants a wider tire to give it a bit more of an aggressive look. We have lotsa snow...doesnt' do a whole lot of off roading but it'd be nice to have the option. Also, he doestn' want something too meaty looking because he wants to keep the classy Limited look. Everywhere in town here has nothing that's wider for some reason? they will be mounted on the factory wheels...unless he can't find what he wants, he will maybe go shopping for some aftermarket wheels.
For now, whats out there in a wider tire for the factory 17" rims?

I think that people have gone to a 275 at least...maybe even 285's

With the stock wheel, you should probably go with either the Bridgestone Dueler Revo's or I would check out the Nitto Terra Grapplers. If you do some research on the site (search function at top of page), you will find that most people enjoy the Bridgestones.

By the way, size would be 265/70/17. 285's would rub to much and would require modification. There will be no rub with the 265's.

thanks for help! He's actually checking into the Nittos right now. They look like a great tire. I keep bugging him to get new wheels cuz i dont' like the look of the limited ones, so he said he's gonna go shopping for some 18's i think. He doesn't want chrome "bling bling" rims, just something classy looking that's polished, or maybe even black. Any suggestions?
 
How come no one runs 275/65's or 275/70's? Granted there is a limited selection of tires in these sizes, but I would think they would be a nice solid increase in height and width.

Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmors are offered in 275/70's....

I think that most people are buying what is proven to be good by word of mouth. I just had 265/70 BFG KO's put on today for this very reason. These tires are awesome!!

Anyway, the Goodyear's are so new, it's like they need more street credit. :D

18" means you will have a lower profile tire which won't be as good for offroading.

275's are cool.

285's take some grinding of plastic.

I am running 285/60/18 AT's. Rubbing is minimal. Still plenty of sidewall for the casual offroader. I plus-sized so that I could have 18" rims and still maintain a 60 series sidewall.
 
I'm running 275s ... you cannot fit them unless you have a lift, and unless you are willing to chop off a lot of plastic. Even with 4" of lift, you'd need to cut a good deal to fit 275s or 285s.
 
Damn...Is that really the case? Toyota didnt' bother to leave 5mm of clearance for the tires? Anyone have pictures of this?
 
The issue is not so much with the height as with the fact that when you turn the wheel the increased height AND width cause rubbing on the inner fender lining and possibly (like with the 315s I ran for awhile) rubbing on the upper arms and frame (and that was even after grinding off some of the frame to fit them!).
 
I understand clearance when turning the wheel...but I can't imagine that toyota made tolerances so tight that you can't even squeeze an extra 5mm of width on the inside.
 
I thought that 275's were ok - just very minimal rubbing at worst.

How much grinding of plastic do you think for 275 MTR's?

I'm running the MTRs right now, and ran them with 3.5 and 4 of lift.

How much lift do you have?

If you have 3"+, then you will need to cut off the plastic cups at the bottom of the plastic fenders and some of the plastic inner fenders themselves -- just wherever the rubbing occurs.
 
No, as I stated, nothing larger than a 265/70/17 will fit without a lift.

Yes, I am running 275s. No, they are not on stock wheels, and I have over 4" of lift. No, they are not rubbing with my 4" of lift, because when I ran 315s, I had to reshape the front bumper and fenders, and cut out all of the inner fender lining.
 
You COULD conceivably fit them, but it might require more cutting than you'd like. If you had at least 3" of lift, it'd be different, but with only 2" of lift, I'm not sure you'd like having them much because if you EVER tried to take it offroad with the 275s (and only 2" of lift) you would have MAJOR rubbing problems.
