I have had my 97 4runner for almost a year now and i figure i might as well do something to make it look a little better. i want to start by painting the rims black, but i dont really know where to start. i would assume sandblasting and finding someone to powder coat them. I have no idea if i should do that or use some other kind of paint or what i wanna do. Any help would be appreciated. I would be using the stock wheels

Fwiw i found a local guy on craigs who blasted and powdercoated a set for me and charged me $150. Im real happy with the results. Hope that gives you a cost baseline should you decide to go the pc route. I dont have any experience in painting wheels, not something i wanted to tackle at the time.

that youtube video is very help full! i plan on doing it myself. my grandpa has a sandblaster so i just need to find the right type of paint. I will watch the rest of that video soon. thanks!

I just painted all 4 of my wheels. Man what a pain in the @$$ - at least if you want it done right.

So I did it something like this, two wheels at a time.

If possible unmount your spare and use it to replace one of the wheels so you can do two at a time.

a) remove 1st tire, put on spare

b) remove 2nd tire, leave truck on jack stand or if none, jack

c) wash wheel using bucket and soap

/*if wheel is already painted, such as aftermarket*/
d) use 3M brillo pad to scuff up the paint then rinse
[use the redish/purple one that is slightly grittier than your standard green kitchen one]

e) use painters tape ~1/8 or 3/16" tape to tape off as necessary. This took me an average 1 hour per wheel

f) 1st coat

g) 90 mins go by

h) 2nd coat

i) put on truck

J) repeat for other tire or do both tires simultaneously then repeat for other two

BTW: I used semi-gloss black because in my experience flat black becomes dark gray w/ 18 months and semi-gloss holds up better, eventually turning into flat black.

thanks for the tips. anyone else had any experience with the paint? i have an idea of what i want to use but not sre.
