They are hard to get out. Might try spraying some WD40 around it.

Spray it with penetrating oil, then pull harder.

My improvised, on-the-fly method, which may or may not work with yours:
Clamp down hard on the valve with horizontally-oriented, large long-nosed vice-grips.
Tilt the valve out using the metal below as the fulcrum.
The more delicate operation was removing the old, hardened grommet.
I sliced it vertically, then carefully peeled it inward and upward.
It broke into pieces--which maybe it wouldn't have if the PO had changed it instead of leaving it in for 16 years---and some small pieces had to be fished out of the hole.
The LED-illuminated grabber claw thing was useful here.

When I replaced mine, it was a real pain to get out, and as you saw in my video that LittleCaesar linked to, I had to use the long pliers and channel locks to get it out. If you have already tried that to no avail, you might want to try cutting the old grommet with a razor blade in one or more spots to try to loosen it up a bit. Take caution not to drop any pieces down into the valve cover, though. Minuscule bits might not hurt anything, but I wouldn't take chances leaving a big chunk of old grommet down in there. It was a while ago, but I think it might have even taken two of us, one with the channel locks and one with the pliers, to pry the darn thing out. Good luck, it's not too bad as long as you work methodically and use force when necessary.

Finally got the SOB out!! Yay, that only took two hours. After having sprayed with silicone lubricant and fighting for a while with various methods. The final forumla was add WD-40 to the mixture wiggle then add a small vice grip to the nipple using the lip as a pry point the add an 18" pry bar then prying against the top of the valve cover ( probably not recommend) and it finally popped. Grommet came out in three pieces thank God! My method for that was a flat head and prying its grip on the valve cover so it could spin then clamping players from my fishing gear to pull it out in pieces. Only concern was that the new valve has a plastic right angle and the old was a straight all metal one. Hose went on without much fuss.

Glad you got it out...sounds like yours was baked in there a bit more than mine was.

I pulled mine out when engine was warm. Came out no problem. 173k
Mine still rattled but replacing it solved a few issues I was having.

I couldn't get mine out, but then I took a hair dryer and heated The Grommet up and was able to pull it out pretty easily. Mine was super hard and brittle with about a 275 thousand miles on it. Maybe I got lucky!

No, that's a good move. I recommend trying to this on a warm (but not REAL hot) engine. Makes it a lot easier.
