help picking tires (a/t vs m/t) etc

So finally its time for tires. ill break down the use of my rig and what im looking for

80% highway and city driving

15% light off road (camping etc.. maybe going a little beyond where a subaru wagon could go - and some very occasional snow)

5% real off road.. I hope this will change but at the time being i have no friends who are into it so i don't typically get myself into situations you cant get out of alone

Id like little driveline noise and vibration and want to take as little hit possible on MPGs, i love the look of aggressive tires but i suppose i cant have my cake and eat it to

I am upgrading to 285/75/16's and i get some awesome wholesale rates through work.. i put an order in for firestone destination A/T's (these hit the spot costing me about 180 a piece .. this is VERY cheap here in canada)

I am starting to reconsider my initial order and now am wondering if i should go with M/T's.. i dont want to push much beyond 200 a tire (bfg a/t are 250 here for a reference)

do you think the 285/75/16's destination A/T will do my truck justice..any advice is appreciated!

I have 265/70/r16 Destination A/T and honestly if I could do it again, I would have spent a little more and gone with some duratracs or something else.

Something that would do a little better during the 5%. Because even though it is only 5% of the time, that 5% is going to bring you into some intense situations where traction will matter.

Hopefully this makes since, it's been a long week.

Here's what I think:

As you go bigger in tire size, say from 265/70s to 265/75s or more likely 285/75s, it looks almost odd if you have a "smooth" looking tire IF you have a pretty tall lift like yourself. And if you're gonna go 285s anyway it means you're pretty serious about offroading and it's gonna take a toll on your gas mileage regardless, so why not go with a beefier M/T or more aggressive A/T tire like the Duratrac? I don't have any experience with larger tires at all but that's what I believe from looking at different forums.

I have destination a/t's. They have the title of "AT" but no way. If anything they're a really aggressive highway tire. On a trail I'd find them useless to be honest with you. Get a better AT. Nitto's, Goodyear, Cooper, etc. They all have great AT's.

I just saw the Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx. If you can deal with an E rated tire these might be good. I havent seen anybody with them yet.

The Falken Wild Peak/Rocky Mountain A/T is supposed to be a fantastic A/T tire at a very reasonable price. It is supposed to excel at just about everything but deep mud. Rated higher than the BFG A/T, and much cheaper. I will likely be putting these on my 4Runner.

MTs will look butcher. They will be nosier, use more gas, wear faster, cost more, have more vibrations and won't do as good in the on road snow.

About 90% of my offroading has some rock crawling. I'm running Yokohama AT/S and they do awesome (I'm not trying to talk you into my tire, just as a reference). Sure a MT knobs might grab the little rock edge and climb a little better but I'm very happy with my ATs. I don't do mud so that is not an issue. The "mud" near us in very sandy.

I just wish they looked more aggressive (sidewall/shoulder).

Exactly spot on. I love MTs because they look so much better and in snow offroad they work awesome and have saved my ass in some situations. I love taking the family up on mellow trails during winter and those MT's have saved our life.

But on road MT's suck in ice. If there is at least 2+ inches of snow it helps but once its packed or ice they can slip a little. Still not that bad where I wouldnt buy MT's but just expect them not to perform in snow/ice on road as well as MT's.

I run 33" AT treadwrights E load w/BFG style treadpattern on the wifes Expedition and they are great. A litte rough due too the higher ply tire though and work awesome in snow.

I was a little skeptical but I did some reading and watched a couple of vids on youtube and from FJcruisers forums and the Falkens seem to be more of a durable AT than they look and all the reveiws were pretty positive on and off road and in the 285/75 size they were about $800 vs $1075 for Duratracs on the Discountdirect site.

Tire prices have gotten a bit crazy over the last few years;I bought my Duratracs for about $160/tire back in Oct. '09 and now that are $200/tire.

Thats why I go with treadwright. There are some issues getting the 35" tires due to backorder but Ive ordered 265 and 285's many times with quick shipping.

I got my 265/75/16 8ply Mud Terrain Guarddoggs for around $450 shipped.

I got my 285/70/17 10ply All Terrain Hayden for around $680 shipped.

My 265's have over half tread life and almost 20k miles on them. Not to mention a couple 1600+ mile road trips.

x2, I bought a set of 265/70/17 BFG A/T's for $640 OTD in 2010.
I just bought some 285/70/17 BFG A/T's from the same place for $900.

I run Hankook DynaPro's. I only bought them because I got a great deal. But I love them. I've had BFG A/T's, Duratrac's and Firestone Destination A/T's. I liked the Duratrac's a lot but for the money, I don't think you can beat the Hankook's.

Ive got the duratracs in a 285/75-16, a little over 100 miles offroad,and 2000 on road and loving them. They're much more quiet than my Km2's i had on my 92 Runner and, im talking 50% quieter. And the wheeling ive done hasnt shown any wear on them at all.

I got them because of the snow rating as well.
