1st post, but I've been stalkin these forums for about 3 weeks now, pretty much since I purchased my (first) runner. tried searching, but didn't turn anything up so here it goes:
98 LTD 4wd 140k miles, totally stock from what i can tell.
short story: shifter wouldn't go past neutral from drive. no reverse, no park, no taking the key out.
long story: it's snowing here in north texas. temps are above freezing, and big ole flakes were coming down. we headed out to church and my plan was to roll 2wd except for maybe the 2 or 3 bridges we'd cross. it had been snowing for about an hour and the streets hadn't yet seen much traffic so they were fairly slick. i went ahead and hit the 4wd (hi) early on and wound up keeping it on the whole ~15 miles. it was slow going (under 40mph) the whole way. we made one stop within the first 3 miles to pick up my daughter. pulled into the driveway, put into park, then reverse, then back on our way. 4wd on the whole time. we got to church, pulled up in the parking lot, and i went to back into a spot but it wouldn't go into reverse. based on the feel of the feedback of the shifter, it seemed purely mechanical, as if something were blocking it from going further, like trying to put it into gear from park without the brake pedal depressed. i tried the shift lock button, nothing. tried putting the 4wd shifter into neutral, nothing. 4lo, nothing. i was all crooked up in a handicap spot nosed up to the curb at this point, so i pushed it in the snow covered parking lot (fun!) until it was backed into a spot. put it in neutral, turned it off, and left the key in the ignition. when we left, the roads were much better and i left it in 2wd the whole way home. the couple times we stopped, i tried to put it into reverse with no avail. at one point, i couldn't even get it into neutral. we get home and as i'm idling in front of the house waiting for my wife to move her car out of the garage, (my side is full of bikes/crap) i was finally able to slide it into reverse. it wasn't super smooth like normal, but it went back and forth without a major problem. got it into the garage, and it slid into park. the situation is better now, but i'd hate to get stuck somewhere without reverse and without being able to take the key out. any ideas on whats going on here? i'm thinking something got gunked up somewhere, but where? i'd like to go play on some of the snowy dirt roads around the house, but i don't really want to take it out with it like this.
