Help pricing my 4Runner vs keeping it??

I have 2 4Runners as you see by my sig. Looking at possibly selling my 02'. Currently sits with 220,000 miles more than 75% of those are freeway. EVERYthing is done. Just finished putting new 18" V8 4Runner rims and LT275/65/18 Toyo Open Country AT2 tires on it. Also, replaced all LBJ, UBJ, upper and lower bushings, and TRE (inner and outer) with OEM parts.

I've taken extremely good care of this vehicle. Never missed an oil change. Transmission fluid changed every other oil change. Timing belt was done at 205,000 with all OEM parts including new fan pulley bracket. Clean title, no accidents, clear CarFax. Just some surface rust on the frame welds, that's it as far as rust goes. Everything works, all interior lights and some exterior lights are now LEDs.

I know most people don't care about my stereo, which is fine.

Oil after 5,500 miles:

Picked up my 02 sport edition with all the goodies, (sunroof, sport hood, front skid plate, OEM nerf bars), thundercloud metallic with flawless grey interior, zero rust, one owner west coast, garage kept, nonsmoker, with 240k miles for 5.5k. Unfortunately you won't get much for the add ons. 220k is considered high miles. This is my third 4Runner. I am aware that these trucks will go 350-400k miles. Point being anything over 200k miles will not fetch over 10k period. Doesn't matter what market or what was done to it.

I would say list it for 8k and go from there.

Two 4runners one too many for ya? Get the seat redone and keep on driving it.

What are you thinking of replacing it with?

That's a lot of maintenance work to have done and then pass on the benefits to someone else.

My issue is that I drive 85 miles a day to work round trip. Looking at replacing it with a 4th Gen Acura TL AWD with a 6 speed manual or GS350 AWD. I just take good care of my stuff. Probably would get about 28 MPG out of either vs 17 MPG.

Are you selling it because runner gives a low MPG?
You'll burn an extra gallon of gas each day if you plan to drive runner vs the other two, that is $1.90 a day. The price of gas will probably stay the same for a while: You know a new gas deposit (20 billion barrels) has been just discovered in my area!
Also don't forget about the safety runner gives compared to cars.

I understand it's not the MPG, but more the 'range'... which you'll be filling up every other day or more.

IF only there was a way to get more range out a 17mpg truck.


If it were my shoes... hmm... I'd probably stick with the 3rd gen cause my wife wouldn't let me drive the 5th gen claiming it's her's... oh and move closer

Even if you get a commuter car, your 3rd gen would make a perfect "spare" car/utility vehicle that you don't have to worry about getting knocked around like you would your newer 4runner. I like the idea of having an older spare car around that I know how to do all the maintenance on and don't have to worry as much about it getting beat up.

Cant have too many cars. I have three and a motorcycle and my wife has one. Try to convince your wife it is like insurance when one of your other cars breaks down or has a minor accident. what if you have a dead battery in the morning and your already late? You don't really need three cars but it sure is nice to have an extra one.

I understand...but if her DD is ever out of commission and has no other transportation, she will definitely appreciate the 3rd ride. Just keep shutting down any potential buyers....will at least buy you some time until a potential emergency situation comes up where a 3rd vehicle may be needed...

What you meant to say is "pull one of her spark plug wires out" Then "work" on her car for a few days to show her the value of the third car.

I bought a 2015 Corolla S to use strictly as a daily and occasional Uber car. I really enjoy it. I bought mine with 35k miles for 14.5k.

I bought it with intention of doing some part time uber to help pay for my hobbies. If I was strictly looking for a daily I would look for a TDI VW that's a bit older. After the scandal they can be found for very cheap and all the BS aside, perform great.

I'd say go for the Acura if your commute isn't filled with traffic lights. If so, then the 350, which I take it won't be the F.

Really enjoyed your posts over the years. I'd say $7500 gets offers for it.

We had 3 vehicles at one point. A 08' Camry SE V6 which was my wife's DD. An 06' Corolla XRS, and the 02' 4Runner. Both cars got well over 30 MPG, got even 40 occasionally in the XRS, (which if you think about getting one, do it!).

I just don't need 2 4Runners. I wish I could pick up a Civic Si or another XRS, but they aren't great for kids with car seats in the back.

It is unfit to really wear the Toyota badge IMHO. Probably the biggest gripe is that the 2AZ-FE I4 had the wrong control rings installed from day one, thus it has burned some oil from day one but not enough to warrant a rebuild by Toyota. Also the back of the valves get dirty easily. In comparison to my mother's Camry from 98 it just lacks refinement. But it sips the gas on the highway.

Post some pics of the new ride. Since you do keep cars for some time the Lexus would probably be the wiser choice.

A couple different viewpoints:

3rd Gen T4R as a 3rd extra vehicle.
If you can afford the new vehicle without selling your 3rd gen as a financial cushion, consider this. As an add-on with minimum legal insurance, that's hardly any extra per month. You'll have to register/inspect it once a year and maybe a couple oil changes if you stick with synthetic? Some gas stabilizer in the tank so it won't go bad from sitting. That'll be maybe $200-$300 a year to have a ready to go backup driver that's very capable and that you know is maintained well and reliable.

Keeping the 3rd gen as your DD.
If you put the lift, wheels, and tires back down to stock, you could probably stay close to 22-24 mpgs, especially if most of your drive is highway. You'll still have 4wd when necessary, and stock, it's still pretty capable.
When these trucks aren't modded and you stay off the skinny pedal, they actually make pretty good MPG.
You are probably only at half life with this truck, and you know the maintenance is good. You can do most of the work yourself, unlike newer vehicles, which saves significant money.


Based on what people are saying here, you probably won't get more than $7.5k for your T4R, and I'm seeing on CL that a base 2wd Lexus or Acura is starting around $12k, and those aren't in the best condition. So that's $4.5k extra at the minimum that you'll need to shell out, plus getting all maintenance up to date. Timing belt, fluid changes, spark plugs, etc. So if you sell the 4Runner and buy the Lexus or Acura, you'll need to pay an extra $5k at the minimum.
How many gallons of gas could that buy you if you stuck with the 3rd Gen?

Also, don't forget, a newer vehicle (especially a luxury vehicle) will cost a good deal more to insure, so you might not see much of a difference monthly. You'll probably want better insurance, too, because you can't just say,
"**** it, I'll go to a junkyard for a new bumper", when you get rear ended.

Couldn't agree more about the 07-10 Camry, especially with the I4. Those engines had some issues like premature water pump failures, easy to strip head bolts, etc. The 2GR-FE 3.5L also suffered from VVT-I oil line leaks that would drain the engine oil in about 30 seconds, transmission flare, etc, etc. Seems that lots of Toyota engines of those years including the IS250, and even worse the 2006 GS300. They only made the direct injection 3.0L V6 for 1 year. I like to call it the bastard child Toyota wished they never made. It suffered from significant carbon buildup AND oil consumption, from the TOP and BOTTOM of the motor. To fix, they had to remove the engine and transmission then rebuild the engine from the ground up. New rings, new valve seals, etc. To pay the Lexus dealer, it was about $7000. They did extend the warranty though.

I drove the 4th Gen TL with a 6 speed transmission, and it was impressive. Has > 300 HP. Honda manual transmissions are bulletproof reliable and the J series engine is as well. I've driven the 08' GS350 AWD, and I liked it a lot, just wish it looked a little better.
