Help!! Random intermitent short causing problems

It doesnt happen all the time, but recently started to happen more often.
When I turn the ignition I can hear a short (or something) and I have no power. Won't start, no window or door controls. Seems pretty random.
Resets all the radio station etc. A thump to the column seems to fix it. So, has this happened to anyone?
Any Ideas?

A short WILL blow fuses, did you get a blown fuse?
Are you sure it's not intermittent loss of connection?
Your battery posts and connectors making bare metal to bare metal contact? Grey metal is NOT bare metal. Bare metal is shiny steel/lead/copper.

Then weak battery. You had it tested?
When starter solenoid current (appox) flows, it will drop battery voltage. Stereo is sensitive to voltage drop. Will reset when voltage goes below a certain point. Did you monitor voltage when this happens? I use a cigarette lighter socket volt-meter from Amazon to monitor my voltage.

I know they are just words to somfolk, but you probably SMELL a short if you are not unlucky enough to actually see it !

Check the continuity through the starter circuit. The contact points within the starter are a "known" issue to which Toyota has a kit they sell to upgrade them for $40-50. I just bought a factory re-man unit for ours as my elderly father was driving it. As others have suggested, check the basics like battery, etc. If memory serves, there is also a brake/trans(if auto) safety type switch in the system that be problematic if dirty.
