HELP! Running boards

Hey I sold my running boards this weekend to a guy with a silver sr5 99 4runner. He calls me and says that they won't fit. I thought that 3rd gen running boards were universal am I wrong? These running boards came off of my 98 sr5 4runner. Here is what they look like

anyone? I haven't been able to find anything or maybe this guy just isn't installing them right.

depends on the trim package for the fender flares. those wouldn't work with my '02 SR5. I think they changed in '99 with the mid-gen upgrade.

if it matters, he didn't have any sort of fender flares, like the small chrome or sport plastic fenders.
