HELP! Sounds TURRIBL after timing belt & water pump

Hello T4R! I just replaced my timing and drive belts, water pump, and etc. I bought the kit with OEM parts and everything went very well. Initially, after refilling the radiator the water pump was leaking (I didn't start the car.) I pulled everything off and cleaned the block much better, reassembled everything, refilled the radiator and no leaks. I started the 4Runner and it sounded like SHIT. I was careful that the cam pulleys and crankshaft pulleys were lined up correctly, but one of them must have gotten off? IDK. Here's a video of what it sounded like. Any thoughts?

Check the timing marks.

Remove the timing cover and see where it's coming from, did you pull the pin from the tensioner? Sounds like belt slapping the cover.

That's what I was thinking too...tensioner not released...belt flappin or tensioner pulley flappin...it's tough on a short video but I listened to the 5 seconds of noise several times...I had my upper hose on wrong once and it hit the fan...made a noise kinda like that too...just knicked the hose.

Non interference engine, not valves! Something is hitting somewhere. Look for it externally, but expect to take the timing covers off and find out what went wrong. Possible failed or unreleased tensioner, but the noise seems a little to rapid.

Thanks for the replies guys. The guy at the parts store also thought possibly something hitting the timing cover or valves. The tensioner pin was pulled, but I had to remove then reinstall the tensioner which meant I had to put it in a vice and put the pin back in. I would love for it to be something easy instead of a problem with the valves, but that's what it sounded like to me.

Ok, i know this sounds stupid but check your cam pulleys. I had a very very similar noise pop up about a week after my rebuild and it ended up being the alignment pin on the driver cam pulley slapping back and forth because i forgot to torque that one.

Figured it out with a stethoscope

I didn't replace the cam seals, so the pulleys were left untouched.

You can run the engine without the belts on and see if it goes away. Sounds like the fan is hitting something. Like a power steering or alternator bolt was left out a hair.

Timing is probably correct as the engine looks like it's running smooth. Even one tooth off will cause a shake. I'd suspect auxiliary pulley system. Take off one belt, run it. Repeat until all belts are off. If it continues, then it's in the timing area.

Good luck

Thanks man!

OP, I would just manually turn the engine over now at the crank and listen for the sound. Then hopefully you can pinpoint it it’s origin.

UPDATE on my 4Runner. Some people thought that maybe the sound I was hearing after my timing belt job was something loose hitting another part of the engine. As it turns out, they were right! The noise in my video was from the fan clutch bolts not being tight enough. The fan was making contact with the shroud. I have mixed feelings about this. I'm glad that I did everything else correctly, but annoyed that it was such a simple fix that I didn't continue to investigate.

It's not a valve issue. I've had valvetrain issues and that's not what they sound like. It'd be more like a metal clanking/clicking noise and not that rapid. Plus that engine would be shaking around like crazy if it were misfiring that bad.

Something is loose. I agree with others in taking off all the accessory belts (and maybe the fan) except for the alternator and firing it up and see if your noise is gone. If not, then dig in to the timing cover and find your noise. You may have to reset the timing belt as well since the marks will not line up. You basically want to double check every part you touched.

EDIT: you found it! Glad it was just the fan, you don't have to dig deep for that one!
