[Help] Stalls when braking hard

Hey Guys,

I've been researching about this and I'm stumped. I think its my torque converter, but I can be completely wrong about this. Or, since I brake so hard it messes with something with the fuel?

The problem is when I speed up and brake suddenly the car would stall. It happened to me 3x now.

Thanks for the help!

That is what can happen when a TC is bad. They will not idle in gear when stopped. Any noises coming out of it? Transmission louder when in D but quieter when in P or N. If you put it in N will the engine stay running and not stull out?

Giving it more gas and not going anywhere liike its harder to move then it was before? I have one with a Bad TC that I am not driving.

It would be best to get that verified as the cause of your issue. If it is indeed bad. That needs changed ASAP before it damages your transmission or completely fails.

Does it sit and idle properly while in gear. Your stating you hard brake and it stulls. So does it have a very rough idle?

Car idles fine. If anything it idles a bit low, maybe 500-700rpm. Maybe the fast drop of RPM from 4k-5k rpm to like 700rpm when I brake hard? That's the only suggestible thing.

I checked for torque converter noise, its pretty quiet underneath the car. So that rules that out.

Hmmm...

Your saying 4 or 5k then hard brake and it stulls.. First I cant tell you the last time any of my non standard 4 runners was at 4 or 5k on the rpm gauge. ;)

So are you at highway speeds and doing this or accelerating from a dead stop?

Any vacuum leaks or brake booster major vaccuum leaks?? As this maybe a cause as the stull as well.

So must be at Indy doing 5K rpms and then a hard turn comes up needing the hard braking? Who needs to go from 5K to hard stop??? Its not a Porsche!!!

LOL people are Funny. :cowboy:

Yeah, I was just thinking that. If you regularly go from 5K RPMs to hard stops enough to notice an issue like this, chances are you're gonna BREAK it hard, from not braking fast enough.

All seriousness though, sounds like a TC issue, or maybe a fuel pressure issue. Maybe the pump isn't keeping up. How is it when you floor it?

I would say it's a possible TC issue the still to me sounds like its failing.

However, I cant say I ever had the tac
h at 4 or 5k and slamming the brakes either..

I live in the bay area... Driving in Silicon Valley with all the idiots (and I'll leave it at that before I start ranting.) Sometimes you just have to drive unnecessary aggressive. Its an express road, so its 45mph limit. I was pushing the car to go around an idiot that's driving 30mph, then having to go from ~50mph down to maybe 15-20mph to turn.

Also, yes I am well aware that I was driving like a complete a**hole. Being in traffic for 1.5hrs and having to deal with an idiots that can't follow speed limits and was on his phone. F- that.

I'll check the leaks this weekend.

Louder horns are a great asset driving in CA traffic. I recommend these: PIAA | Automotive Superior Bass Horn (330/400Hz) #85115.

But... I agree with all above sentiments. These 4Runner's really don't like to rev hard, the transmission tries really hard to stay below 4K RPM's. I did have one other thought, sometimes when I do a hard stop my idle will drop a little, like instead of idling around 650-700 it'll go to 550 or so. A tiny blip of the throttle will bring it back up. I think that might be more of a brake booster function since it pulls vacuum to assist in hard stops to apply more pressure. It might also be part of the issue. Double-check the condition of the vacuum hoses to and from the brake booster.

That makes more sense as you are in an autobahn situation. :D. From what I have heard that entire area is a nightmare to drive. :(

Keep us posted as the only 2 things I came up with

1] nasty vacuum leak [ if your runner has a brake booster]

2] Or your TC is not functioning properly.

These 2 things can cause that issue.

Try this, get up to your normal freeway speed and instead of doing hard braking with the rig in Drive, try carefully shifting the trans first to Neutral, then do the hard braking. Does the rig still stall?

That will prove without a doubt if the TC is the cause. :]

Thanks you guys are amazing. I will check out the TC, Brake Booster, and any Vacuum Leaks. I'll keep you guys updated.

And trust me, I don't want to throw down the hammer, but mf-ers here need to pay attention to the road. I seriously think that they need to make the driver test SIGNIFICANTLY harder. That would help with California traffic a lot. lol F-in' follow the flow of traffic, SIGNAL, you don't have to make this turn there's always the next turn, and if you do hot boy shit, make sure no one is around.

I could be wrong, but the 01 and 02 may not have a vaccuum brake booster as their abs and master cylinder are one are more less one piece so if you dont have a vaccuum based brake booster. You will know why.

Try to be safe out there. :]

So, its not the TC. That test wasn't fun, I felt like throwing up. Though I know that my Tundra brake upgrade w/ SS lines is totally worth it.

Not the Brake Booster, though I am right on the cusp of the minimum amount of fluids, that got filled.

Vacuum Leaks, I saw one cracked vacuum hose. Just to be sure, I'm going to just replace that and retest that this weekend.

Since you say this happens under hard braking, I'm going to guess its either an ABS or traction control issue. I've had my engine cut out a couple of times over the last years or so in weird braking situations. There's a thread about something similar on the first page ironically. Not sure its related but maybe, I'm curious too.
Pulling the green fuse (disable VSC)

Never stated anywhere on this thread but the OP information states 96 4wd base

If this is the case, VSC and TRAC are not an option as only on 01 and 02.

If not TC, then maybe the brake booster. I would think though it would be harder to brake if vacuum being lost. Pedal would get real hard to press??

At this point, I am at a loss as the cause. :[
