HELP - Taking front wheels off???

I'm going on my first road trip with the '86 4R tomorrow and the front brakes started squealing today. I picked up some pads and was going to change them out tonight. I've done lots of break changes and even turbo swaps on my other cars, but...

I have no clue about the 4x4 front wheels. How the heck do you take them off? THe hub locks keep you from just removing the lugs and pulling the wheel off. I tried to remove the hub lock (all those little bolts and nuts) but the brass bolt inside would just turn (there was resistance on it like it was turning some thing in the drive train).

Any help would be great as I'll be driving up in the mountains tomorrow and would like good brakes :

You cannot get a lug wrench on your lugnuts? That's really odd.
You should not have to mess with the hub to get your wheels off.

If I am reading this right, you cannot get the wheels off, right?

Is it hanging up after you remove the lugs, or can you not get to them?

If the lugs are off, but the center hole in the rim will not fit around the locking hub, you may have Chevy wheels on there. Toyota stock rims have a larger center hole than some aftermarket Chevy wheels. I really can't see someone dismantling their hubs to get different wheels on, but I have seen some weird things over the years, so...ya never know.

If this is the case, go get a manual (they are cheap enough and worth it!) and grease your hubs while you are in there.

Well, been real busy and have not had a chance to mess with this again yet.

Gryphon, I can get the lug nuts off, but the wheel will not fit over the hub. The wheels are from Toyota too. I shoul dhave my computer working to night and I'll post some pics of the rims on the 4R. I did pick up a manual when I bought the 4R.

What rims should be on a '86 so that I don't have to disasemble the hubs to change the wheels (flat tire anyone?? )

You should not have any problem at all getting your tires off. The only thing that I could think of is that maybe the person who had it made a set of chevy six lug wheels fit with a dremel and a hammer. A Chevy wheel will have the same lug pattern, but the center is about a quarter inch too small to fit over the lockers. I have taken my lockers off once, but that was just to pump some grease in there. It should come off just the same as any other car. I have an 86 4runner too, and I have never experienced this. There could be something along the lines of adhesive behind the wheel, but that doesnt make sense. I would say take off all the lugs, jack it up, and kick the tire until it breaks loose, but thats just me. Best of luck.
