help w choosing a deep cycle battery

first off, plz forgive me as im a complete noob when it comes to battery 'shop talk' and such...i spent some time online researching what would serve my needs and i ended up more confused - theres a LOT of info out there as you might imagine

im looking for a very basic and simple battery setup to use when i go camping for 2/3 days max..my concern is using my existing battery and end up being stranded...i do not have anything heavy duty to run like a fridge or anything...just relatively low draw things like a fan, boombox, led lights and a small inverter to charge small devices etc...from what i understand i need a deep cycle battery and a charger i use at home

any advice or recommendations for my needs is much appreciated

Don't overthink it. If you're talking about carrying an extra battery that you'll be charging at home, and you're only using it for light loads, any battery will do.
 
thnx for the reply and i know its a very simple situation- i suppose i was looking for recommendations on what size, brand and where to get a good price on these...i wasnt even sure a deep cycle battery was what i should get- i read where someone suggested a golf cart battery

theres a whole lot of info out there when it comes to baterry types and applications

Since you'll be lugging the thing around to and from the car/house you don't want something to big and heavy.

I've just starting looking for a battery for similar conditins and found a few on Amazon that would fit the bill.

This battery is a Group 27 and has 100AH capacity.

thanks very much for the detailed reply and links...to be honest those batteries cost quite a bit more than i expected..not that i dont think they are worth it but $300 for battery and charger is pretty steep for me...i'll keep looking around and maybe find something less $$ to serve my needs

They are a little pricy, but they are AGM. AGM are sealed and do not give of toxic fumes. The cheaper maintenance free batteries (the kind you use to start your car) do off-gas a little. What that means is that you can put the AGMs anywhere and not worry about the fumes. The maintenance free batteries would have to be placed in a sealed container or used outside since they do produce some toxic gas. That's why the are placed in the engine compartment.

Most golf cart batteries are flooded cell lead-acid batteries that require periodic replacement of the distilled water. These have to be used outside of the living space in a well ventilated area. They produce significant caustic hydrogen and oxygen gasses. That is why recharging needs to occur in well ventilated areas. As little as 4% hydrogen gas in the air is considered explosive.

I want to be able to place the battery in the car, charge it while I'm driving, and not worry about the battery off-gassing. I have the battery box and charger already, so it's not quite as expensive for me to get the battery up and running.

You can find cheaper AGM batteries that don't have the higher capacity of the ones I picked out to show you. Here's a smaller one.

thats more like it! thanks again for the explanation and that does matter to me since im sleeping in my T4R and the battery will be in there as well...im going to assume that this smaller battery will be sufficient for light duty work as i mentioned, and good for a couple nights...

if i buy a charger to use at home can i plug that into an inverter in a pinch if i need too??

That's what I plan to do. I have a TE so there is a built-in inverter that has a plug in the cargo compartment. I plan only to use the charger when the T4R is running. I think it would drain the starter battery pretty quick if left on when the truck is turned off.

You don't say what 4Runner you have.

i have 2003 Sport- it came w an inverter but is not working for some reason..the only plug is in the center console afaik...the switch lights up on the dash when i activate it but no power...hopefully nothing to complicated

appreciate the heads up titan...to be honest im not an overland type guy, i just head out for 2 or 3 nights max...that sears battery is out of my price range for sure...i like that $67 mighty max for a small affordable unit- add a charger and im in $100..its only going to power a low draw fan, my bluetooth speaker and couple other small electronics
