Help w/ Gentex mirror w/Comp Wiring

I just purchased a used Gentex auto-dimming mirror with compass off of ebay....and like an idiot, I didn't ask if the wiring harness was included. The mirror came off of a 03 Tundra...so I figured I was safe...However... I have NO WIRING!! Is there anyone out there who can assist me with this? Maybe I can compensate in other ways??? I've tried to locate a company that would sell the harness seperately, with no luck. Any suggestions???

I may be able to help you out. I bought one of these off ebay a year or so ago and installed it quickly. However I had the wiring for it.

Is it the autodimming with compass or does it have Homelink and temperature and all that other good stuff?

If you look on the backside there should be a socket for a plug with 7 pins. Do you have the connector that fits into this or is this what you're missing? A picture of the back would be great.

I know that all you need is to run power and ground for the mirror and compass, which are pins 1 and 2. (Not sure which is which offhand).

If you don't have the connector, chances are slim that you will find the one that fits. If the pins are visible, you could always wirewrap the wires to the pins. From the mirror, the wires run in the headliner down the A pillar to the drivers kick panel, where they are tapped into a hot (on accessory) and ground. This would be a cheap way to do it, maybe not the best.

Let me know what you have and I'll see what I could do...

It is the one with just the compass. It does have a 7 pin connection in the back...however, I do not have the connector. That is my prob . If there is any way I can figure out which pin is my power and ground, then maybe I can make it work.

I'll have to check the actual connections tomorrow in the light. I believe that pin 1 is on the far left if you are looking at the back of the mirror, but don't quote me on that. I'll let you know what I find out.

Is gentex the manufacturer? Have you tried calling them? I know with some manufacturers, they will not have a problem sending you out another wiring harness. That is what I would do (If you haven't already....)

Yes, I called them. They asked where I got the mirror, and when I told them it was used.... they could no longer help me Said they didn't sell seperate harnesses for used mirrors.

Ok, Here is the deal. If you are looking at the back of the mirror while it's mounted, the pin on the far left (closer to the center) is hot and the second pin over is ground. I imagine that the others are for all the fancy features I chose not to have.

As for the connector, you could try to find one or something similar at a local radio shack or you could wire wrap the wires to the pins. It isn't real clean, but you would be hard pressed to even notice when the mirror is installed. You may even be able to find a small 2 pin connector and make it fit. Good luck with getting it to work. I love mine and it's great knowing where I'm headed, now only if I had someplace to go...

You might try contacting the original seller or one of the other sellers on ebay that frequently sell that mirror. They might be able to hook you up with the connector. Once you have that, it's a trivial matter to make the harness.

Another option is to see if you can locate the matching connector at digikey. Tyco/Amp and/or Molex probably make it.

You could try your local junk yard. Gentex mirrors are fairly common so there should be lots of junk cars with the connector you need.

I think the pins might be a bit thin for reliable wire wrap. It would probably be easier to unsolder the connector and solder on a new connector pair -- potentially with a short stub of wire.

I assume you're also missing the wire harness cover that runs from the base of the mirror up to the headliner. Last time I checked, you could get that from partznet for < $2. They may also be able to help you out with that connector.
