Help w/Sunroof

So my wife borrows my 4runner for a trip to Chicago. While up there she's cruising around with the sunroof open but is having a hard time hearing her GPS so for some unknown reason she decides to close the sunroof shade (I assume that's what you call the interior panel for the sunroof?) instead of just closing the sunroof itself.

Anyway, she claims is closed without any problem or resistance but now it doesn't want to open at all. She almost couldn't get the sunroof to close because it was somehow hitting the shade and auto opening. She finally got the sunroof closed but now both closed but I can't open the shade. Not sure if opening the sunroof would open the shade or not but I'm somewhat leery of trying it without better understanding what's going on?

Any of you have any idea on what she might have done to it or how to fix it?

It sounds like it has some home came off track and now the sunroof is pinching it. You can open sunroof with shade closed and as the sunroof goes back it will pull the shade back same time. I'd try opening sunroof with shade closed and see if it will pop it back on the tracks. Just start slow and if you meet a lot of resistance stop close sunroof then only other opinion would be to drop the head liner down and see if you can put the shade back on its tracks.

Um. I'm not sure about 2006s, but my 2004 wont even allow you to close the shade with the sunroof open. It will only close as much as the sunroof is closed. She may have forced it open and not realized it, but it would take some serious effort to do so, at least it seems that way on my 2004.

My wife isn't dainty, especially when she's pissed (which she probably was dealing with Chicago traffic and the GPS) so I think that is what really happened?

The majority of my experience with sunroofs is with Volvo wagons in the past, and operation has been similar to what others are describing: Retracting the sunroof will force the shade open the same amount, and tilting the sunroof would force the shade back a few inches. Closing the shade completely was not allowed if the glass was open at all, unless something was off its tracks.

My 4Runner is rather new to me, but early on (last month) I (for some inexplicable reason) completely closed the shade with the glass already open. For a moment I semi-panicked based on past experience that it shouldn't be possible, and wondered whether I had forced it. Knowing this, I carefully re-opened the shade all the way and allowed the switch operated glass to re-engage. I haven't had any issues and it's worked normally since. Similarly, the above suggestion to try the opposite - close both and allow them to re-engage upon opening - seems an especially good one.
