Help! Frozen calipers? Rustes brakes? Wont move

Hi everyone. Been a while since I've been on here.

Quick background. 2008 t4r sport. 52k miles. Purchased 2 years ago with a full 5 year warranty from Toyota. Truck is mainly driven in winter as needed and summer when towing the boat. I do drive it regularly just to keep things lubricated and moving. But not for long trips.

Anyways...
I washed it last weekend in the driveway. I pulled it into the garage where it has sat for a week.
Lastnight my wife loaded it up as we were gonna go up North ( Ely, MN ). Except when it was put into Reverse it would not go. Put it into drive. Same thing. Now when I got home I thought I'd check. Same thing. Nothing in Reverse or drive. Now I can feel the transmission engaging into gear. And I did put into into 4wd high. It wuld engage. But it just wont go.

In the past if I recall I have had this smae scenario after a wash. And in my experiance it seems like the rotors or brakes or something quickly rust and seize the wheels. After a lil gas the brakes brake free and were good. I assume this is a quick rust issue? This only happens after its been sitting after a wash.

But again the same thing happened yesterday. But I gave it some gas and it wouldnt budge. I put it into neutral and the tires wouldnt move.

I called my toyota dealer they said it sounded like coolant is leaking into the transmission lines? i'm not sure where that came from or why they think this. I opened the coolant cap and could not smell anything but coolant. The color of the coolant was a pink color. About 100 miles ago it was @ toyota for an oil change and everything looked good.

What is going on?
I have read of t4r's having caliper issues?

4th gen T4Rs definitely have a problem with sticking calipers but I've never heard of them sticking this bad. A couple questions for clarification:

When a similar thing has happened in the past, you could (relatively) easily overpower the "stickiness" and then the brakes were fine, correct? Did you ever notice a pull to one side or the other during braking, or 1 wheel being excessively hot, or anything else indicating a stuck caliper?

When you engaged forward/reverse and tried to drive, how hard did you get on the gas? Was there any vehicle movement at all during that (did you feel the rear start to rise as the driveline bound up)?

Do you see any surface rust on the rotors?

You said the tires wouldn't move even with the transmission in neutral; have you tried jacking up the car and seeing if any wheels will spin? That might help you pinpoint which is the problem.

Sometimes it's the simple stuff too - is your parking brake engaged?

Ignoring the brakes for a moment; have you ever had any problems with the transmission? Shifting hard, not shifting, "rumble strip" feel, etc?

Since you can't roll the truck in neutral, I'm thinking it's not a transmission problem but rather a caliper (or multiple) sticking like never before (Edit: to verify it's not the trans being stuck, start the engine and rev in neutral - it should rev freely if it's out of gear). It's strange that you can't overpower it in drive though, that's really stuck! I'd try raising all 4 corners, putting it in neutral, and spinning the wheels by hand to see which is/are the problem.

A) Yes. Sometimes it has been a little intimidating pressing the gas. Sometimes ore then others.

Did you ever notice a pull to one side or the other during braking, or 1 wheel being excessively hot, or anything else indicating a stuck caliper?
A) Not that I recall.

When you engaged forward/reverse and tried to drive, how hard did you get on the gas? Was there any vehicle movement at all during that (did you feel the rear start to rise as the driveline bound up)?
A) No.

Do you see any surface rust on the rotors?
A) I will have to look on Sunday when I get home.

You said the tires wouldn't move even with the transmission in neutral; have you tried jacking up the car and seeing if any wheels will spin? That might help you pinpoint which is the problem.
A) I have not. I have no way of doing this.

Sometimes it's the simple stuff too - is your parking brake engaged?
A)No. But I will triple check on Sunday.

A) No

Q) So if I put it in neutral and rev the engine. As long as the engine revs ok this is an indicator it is NOT the transmission?

. It's strange that you can't overpower it in drive though, that's really stuck!
A) I cant realy rev. the engine in Drive. I am in my garage and about 12" fro the wall.

I'd try raising all 4 corners, putting it in neutral, and spinning the wheels by hand to see which is/are the problem.
A) Cant. Dont have the equipment.

I originally posted this in the 4th gen. forum. But only got 1 response. So I thought Id try here.

When you put the tranny in gear and reved the engine, did it rev ok? Is it possible the transfer case is in Neutral?

When I get home tomorrow I will check.

So you want me to put into neutral and rev the engine? And see how the engine does when driving?

Puttingthe car in neutral is the same thing as putting transfer case into neutral? Or is it something completely ddifferent Ihave to put into neutral?

How would this have happened?

How can Icheck to see if iIdid aaccidentally bump transfer case into neutral?

How can I undo this?

+++ am I pretty looking at getting a tow truck to have towed? Would a flat bed be best?

If it's in the N position? Diagram should be on the shifter.

How can I undo this?

Shift it back into 2H?

It's not rocket surgery.

Also if your truck is in N, there's a chance it can roll away, so I'd have someone pop the e-brake on it.

I have read of t4r's having caliper issues?

The trans cooler is inside/part of the radiator. It's pretty common for the trans section to rupture, allowing coolant and trans fluid to mix.

yes, Toyota and a lot of other calipers have a problem with the piston seizing.

When my front calipers froze up it locked up pretty strong. I was already driving and I managed to drive 5 more minutes home. I got 110k miles on my first set and 55 on the aftermarket. I use the best pads available.

UPDATE:

So I had the t4r towed via flatbed to my Toyota dealer yesterday. Before we towed it off I trued a couple more times to see if I could get the brakes to break free. Put it into D and it would want to move forward but you could feel the tires would not spin. R same thing. Each time I did this I gave it a lil more and more gas and it gave a little bit each more. Eventually we hooked it up. Put it into neutral. I was hoping that this would break the brakes free. Started the winch and the tires just slide accross the concrete onto the bed. The drivers front wheel looked like it want to roll.

So even in neutral while being winched up on a flatbed the wheels would not spin.
I called Toyota to see if they got it. They said they did and when he lowered the flatbed 3 of the wheels were free and not locked anymore.

They told me they will look @ it next week.

_______________

So my suspicion all along was seized brakes from rust causing the wheels to not spin might be it? *Again. I washed it one night, pulled into the garage and did not drive for a eek or so.

Thoughts?

thanks for the update. it always drives me nuts when people post s problem, but don't follow up with the resolution.

there is no way you are the first person to park a 4Runner with wet brakes for a week. I cannot imagine that would be the problem.
