Help with 3rd gen to 4th gen tires

I have a decent set of 265/75/16 Goodyear Conquest AT tires on my '96. I'm selling the thing and just got an '03 SR5 with aftermarket rims. The tires on it are mere Michelin street tires, measuring 265/70/16. I wanted to switch only the tires - leave the rims on their prospective cars - and move tha AT's to the new 4Runner.

My mechanic says these tires aren't compatible from one another but from looking at the way tirerack and those websites list sizing options, I'm led to believe they ARE compatible.

Are these tires interchangeable?

So how do the sizes work? I know 16 is the rim diameter, and 265 I'm guessing has to do with width of rim. Is the 70 and 75 referring to diameter of tire as a whole?

265/75/16

265 - Width of tire
75- 75% of 265 is the height of the tire from the bottom of the rim to the ground
16 - the rim size

You are correct on the rim size, the 16 in your tire sizes are for a 16 inch rim.

The 265 is the tread width of the tire in millimeters.

the 70 or 75 is the Aspect Ratio.... its the height of the sidewall in a percentage of the treadwidth.

SO, the treadwidth is 265 mm, the sidewall height would be 75% of that (~199mm) for the 265/75 R16 tires.
