Help with 5100 front shock

I don’t know what I did wrong but the shock is pushing through the tower. Did I leave something out ? Both front shocks are doing this. They did not look like this when I first installed them. 2008 SR5. Bilstein 5100’s.

Did you replace just the shocks? Original springs? How many miles? What setting did you the shock to?

Never mind, I was thinking of the rear shocks.

I replaced the shocks only. I see that the pistons are exposed. Instructions weren’t included. I assume that I am missing a bushing under the piston shield? Does anyone have a diagram or explanation of the order of the hardware? Is there supposed to be a bushing under the plastic shield to hold the shield up at the top ? I couldn’t find anything and Bilstein was not helpful at all. The shocks are set at the second ring from the top.

there are no bushings under the plastic shield. I will take a look at my truck in am, but one thing i can tell you now - your top nut is not tight enough for sure.

there is a picture of it fully assemble on the left of the screen. aslong you follow that, it should be right.
yours looks like it came undone i think.

the rubber bushing looks like its upside down, and it just look like the nut came off. if you want, add some locktite so the nut dont come undone.

So long as you have the bushings and washers in the correct order it looks to me like you just need to tighten the top nut. I'm assuming now that the bottom bushing has squished a little that gap has appeared. When I had 5100's I have several threads showing above my top nut.

I remember that the plastic shield would not fit up into the spring any further. The Bilstein boxes were open and taped shut when I received them. I don’t like the pistons being exposed either. I’m wondering if these springs were changed previously or the shocks were incorrect.

Another rubber bushing on the “inside” in the tower.

Below is a pic of the correct 5100 shock.

pic might look generic, but thats how the bushing and washer goes.

its shocks, flat washer, rubber bushing, shock mount, rubber bushing, flat washer and then the nut.

hopefully the shock mount is in good standing. try to tighten the nut again, remember not too much torque on it.
